I just got off the phone with the the main man who has controled Pewaukee Lakes weeds for as long as I remember until last year. The Pewaukee lake Sanitary District lost the bid to the City of Pewaukee last year and it was handled so bad that the the PLSD will get it back again after one year.

I am asking for help in the way of e-mails to our mayor and aldermen to help them see that the concern of cutting huge sections of milfoil out of the East end of Pewaukee lake will only spread the weeds to other parts of the lake.

Last year I witnessed this cutting and I was blown away at he careless spreadding of milfoil. Most of the weeds being cut were blowing away before getting picked up by the cutters. Milfoil patches three times the size of my 20ft Ranger were common for weeks on the other end of the lake. Milfoil was everywhere for weeks blowing from shoreline to shoreline as the wind switched. This was only to make some of the people happy who lived on the shallow East end of the lake.

Now they are working on a plan to do this again even after the weeds grew back only weeks later. How can this actually happen again. Please help out and express your disapproval to this usless spreadding of milfoil.

I have been on Pewaukee lake all my life and I have never seen the spreadding of milfoil so bad. It was by far the worst year for floaters ever. The guys I expressed my opinion to told me it was the boats, I watched the cutting and I know most of it was from what I watched. This can't happen again. It's uncalled for and just plain stupid. Milfoin spreads too easy, to cut is and let it drift all over the lake is just a step backwards. These new government officials need to told why this is not a good idea.

They want to cut huge sections of weeds from the east end of the lake. The depth is 4 to 7ft in that area and it's only being done so the boaters can use the lake. Why can't the boaters just head West 1 mile to use the 10 to 12ft area of the lake for boating or the next 3 miles of clean deeper water. The officials of Pewaukee just want more people to use the East end of the lake so it's closer to down town.

Help me and the other Pewaukee Lake fishermen to stop this needless cutting.
Please send your e-mails to:

[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]

The first address is the new good mayor. The(last years)ex-mayor was booted well before his term was up for good reasons.
The second two are aldermen.

Please take a few minutes to explain that this cutting will only hurt the lake and spread milfoil to other areas of the lake.

Feel free to e-mail me with any questions or concerns.

Mike,

I'll certainly send a few e-mails. I have a couple quick questions. Have you dealt with these people before? Should the e-mail ask that they not cut the milfoil at all, or ask that they perform the cutting more efficiently to eliminate the masses of floating weeds? I take it you feel that the cutting will spread the problem all over the Lake? I'm thinking if most of the correspondence asks for basically the same thing, the chance for success increases.

Kevin

Pewaukee Lake is part of the plan.

The cutting of the weeds in the center of the Eastern half of the lake is the issue. Last year they worked on a section of the lake that was a couple hundred yards off the North shore West of the small island by town. This was being done to increase the boater traffic in that area. This extra boat traffic also increased the spread of chopped up weeds because more boats were working in and around this cut area. Picture a section bigger than a football field being cut to make a bunch of people happy, people who don't care about the whole lake just there section in front of there house, 3 hundred yards from there pier. The section is so far out they can't even see it. WHY DO IT?
Shoreline cutting is what they should stick to and spend the time and money picking up the weeds instead of cutting them. Milfoil can grow 1ft or more a day, in a week it will grow back.

E-mails should say:

Please stop the cutting of weeds in the center of the East end of Pewaukee lake because this will only hurt the lake in the long run. The weeds will grow back in weeks and the floating milfoil will only contribute to the spread of the weeds to other parts of the lake. Last year was the worst year for floating milfoil by far. More milfoil was spread all over the lake and blown around for weeks and weeks.
The thought that cutting a huge open area in such a weedy part of the lake makes no sence. Boaters can use other parts of the lake if they want to swim, ski, tube, ect.
If you could have seen all the weeds floating all around the lake just to make a few people happy. 80% of the lake home owners would agree if they took a look at what it caused.
Pewaukee lake Sanitary District never let the damaging effects of senceless cutting happen. Please work with the people who know best and have dealt with this issue of milfoil and its pro's and cons. Last years plan was one that should be revised by people who know better before the problem gets out of hand.

E-mails sent can be revised in any way as long as it brings up the point of senseless cutting huge sections in the middle of the Eastern 1/2 of Pewaukee lake.

Thanks Mike,

I'm a little slow sometimes. That makes it a little more clear for me. Let the e-mailing begin.

Here is the email I sent to them in case you want to use part of it..

I just wanted to take a minute and relay some basic
milfoil info to you. All it takes is a single small
piece of milfoil to start a whole new plant. Please
stop the cutting of weeds in the center of the East
end of Pewaukee lake. The weeds will grow back in a
matter of mere weeks and the floating milfoil will
only contribute to the spread of the weeds to the
entire lake. Last year was the worst year for floating
milfoil by far. The thought that cutting a huge open
area in such a weedy part of the lake makes no
enviromental sense. Boaters can use other weedless
parts of the lake if they want to enjoy recreational
boating. If you could have seen all the weeds floating
all around the lake just to make a few people happy. I
have to believe that if properly informed, 80% of the
lake home owners would agree, if they took a look at
what it caused. Pewaukee Lake Sanitary District never
let the damaging effects of senceless cutting happen.
Please work with the people who know best and have
dealt with this issue of milfoil invasion. Last years
plan was one that should be revised by people who have
managed milfoil invasion, before the problem gets out
of hand. As a regular Pewaukee muskie fisherman who
spends quite a bit of time and money in the Pewaukee
area ( Gas, Smokey's Bait shop, Waterfront restaurant,
Hotels, Local Fishing Guides) I feel it is very
important to inform you that if this milfoil project I
saw last year was to happen again, it will only make
things increasingly worse for the lake. Pretty soon
the entire lake will be filled with milfoil to the
point where boating of any kind will be negatively
affected. As I am sure you can figure out this will
make fishing even more difficult, which will in turn
push us fisherman away, to other local area lakes
(Oconomowoc, Lac Labelle, or Okauchee) which will take
a large amout of revenue away from the Pewaukee area.
This lake has fast become one of my favorite muskie
lakes and I would really like to see it preserved if
at all possible. I appreciate your public service and
would like to thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Mike Grudgings

Mike, I will get some mail out to those concerned.
The one thing that I noticed every year that I am out there when they are cutting weeds, is that they have summer help kids doing the work. The make a little over minimum wage, and have virtually no expertise when it came to cutting any weeds or off-loading them. Watching them out there on windy days was a catastrophy. They left more weeds in the lake than they took out. There has to be a better way. I assume they either work for The City or County, but these kids need to be trained to do what they are doing, and cutting on windy days should be out of the question to begin with.
Thanks for the contact info.

E-mails sent. Thanks for the heads-up Mike. Last year was terrible out there...especially being the trolling b!@#$ and having to clean all the trolling rods every couple hundred yards. At least they havent brought up poisoning the lake again, although Im sure that one will be revisited in a few years. Let me know if you hear anything back.

Ben, the biggest problem is the people who want this are the people who have the big cash and pull. This is just the a start. A bunch of e-mails will get some attention. Meeting and decisions will be comming soon. I just got the word today. Lots more to follow.

The problem is the people who want to do this don't care about the rest of the lake, just the down town section that is shallow and weed choked. The other end has only a small weed line around the basin and some on the shallow West end. With this cutting things will change on that end and around the whole lake.

I watched the cutters last year and it was a joke.

Mike Grudgings,

That is exactly what I was looking to see from fellow muskie anglers. Your a good man

Please take a few minutes to send an e-mail with some kind of complaint about the amount of floating weeds and poor pickup of floating weeds. Please concentrate on the shorelines and pier areas when cutting for home owners. Keep the weeds from floating from shoreline to shoreline. Cut them and pick them up. We need to get people involved and help straighten out this issue.

This year the Pewaukee Lake Sanitary District will get the bid back. I hope they will do the best job they ever have done.

Yes Beaver, the kids have done a 1/2 assed job in years past. I will make a point to discuss windy days issues and proper training. I will be on top of this all season and I will not be quiet if things get anyting like last year.

Video and pictures will be taken to prove my points.

Lets get some e-mails going................

Mike you certainly hit the nail on the head! This is an issue that needs to be addressed not only our sake, but for future generations as well. As a concerned Pewaukee resident I support and commend your efforts. I will get going on my e-mails to the mayor and our aldermen now.
