So I have to change the oil in my motor so she's ready to rock. It doesn't seem like rocket science, but the concern I have is that it says that when you put the bolt back in after draining the oil, it says that you need to tighten with a torque wrench. So if I was to tighten with just a regular ratchet wrench, what would the effect be? Not sure (as I am somewhat mechanically challenged) what a torque wrench do for the motor?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Joel, the torque wrench is to keep you from over tightening and stripping out the plug. If your careful and don't reef on the plug, there should'nt be a problem.

I can see it now Joel...

"Honey, I stripped my plug cuz I wasn't torqueing it correctly. I gotta get a new motor now. I was thinking the 150 anyway...."

That works all the time doesn't it???

LOL, Now you have me freaked out Theedz. I think I will drain it at home and then find someone with a torque wrench to put it on before I fill 'er up. For something so easy, it's becoming a pain in the keester.

the easy way is, to buy the pump and just pump it out, then you won,t have to worry about the plug.i love it.you can do it while its laying in the water,no mess.system only costs about 20 bucks.

Really, I haven't heard of that. Can you expand on that. Like where can you get it, have you had any problems etc? That sounds like a non messy way to do this. Anyone else heard of this?

You can buy a decent torque wrench for about $20 then you will have it for other uses around the house,
and loan it out to buddies for a beer or six pack

i am from canada, but bought mine from the yamaha dealer in town,i guide here in north western ontario and change my oil every 100 hours, which doesn,t take long for me,even though i use my trolling motor most of the day.works out to about once every month.all the fishing camps use them ,since they all basically have the 4 strokes now,and they do it from the dock,no mess and fast.after the oil is out of the motor, tilt it and turn it ,so you can get the oil filter of without spilling any oil.this pump can be used for a number of things.good luck.

Any pros or cons to doing the pump vs just getting a torque wrench and doing hit that way? I just want to make sure I do it right, and I haven't heard of the pump for changing it, so just want to know if there are any drawbacks. I'm digging the pump option, but don't want to have any problems down the road.

Just my thoughts, If you do a full drain ( removing the Drain Plug ) you will get out more gunk and other stuff that accumulates vs using the pump which leaves some old oil and gunk behind, Personally I prefer the full drain filter change method

i can see your point.once in a while if the boat is on the trailer i will do it the old fashioned way, nothing wrong with that, and i have never used a torque wrench either, just need to tighten it up.i guided with a 50 yamaha for 7 years and mostly used the pump to change the oil,and this motor had some hours on it.i beleive if you change it often you get a lot of less sludge, rather than letting it go to long.synthetic is the way to go,more expensive, but then so are engines.
