On my fishing license it states that it expires 2/28/06, but when my buddy went to renew his the guy at the bait store says its good until 4/1. So I look it up online and it in fact says that all you need in the month of march to fish in Indiana is a 2005 fishing license, and that the 2006 licenses don't become valid until 4/1. Anybody know what gives here? http://www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/licenses/buylic.htm

Under the old licensing system, the licenses did expire on Feb 28th. It is my understanding that because of the new electronic system that it is more convenient to start the 2006 effective date on April 1st. It has to do with starting the new licenses at the beginning of a quarter. Therefore they are extending the 2005 license an extra month to cover the transition. The 2005 licenses are good until March 31st. The 2006 licenses will have the new expiration date on them.

Brad, on your 2006 license the date under "Valid Period" should begin with 01/01/2006. Both '05 and '06 licenses are valid for this month.

The new licenses are valid starting 4/1/2006 and have it printed on the license. You must have a 2005 license to legally fish this month. I was also told that the officers were told to be very lenient on this issue, and that warnings will most likely only be given as long as you possess a 2005 or 2006 license.

You are making to to hard and complicated.

If you have a 2006 license, you are good.

Don't worry about a 2005 license. Get a 2006 license and you are good to go.

ALL YOU NEED IS A 2006 LICENSE

As a general response from someone who studies such issues from a distance.... Any cop can be an a$$hole. But most cops are cool people* and we're lucky to have them doing that increasingly difficult job. Carry the license you have and be polite if you get stopped. You'll likely be fine.

*Theedz is a perfect example of a cool cop. "I'm just doin' my job, I'm the Highway Patrol". He's a gem, that dude.

Dude, it absolutely amazes me the lack of communication in the DNR. If anyone has any trouble this month with licensing issues please keep this number handy 765-473-9722 it is for the DNR Northern Region Headquarters. Those fishing Kosciusko County will be OK but for those fishing any other counties please be aware that many of the Conservation Officers have incorrect information regarding the licenses. Mike is correct, the 2006 licenses are valid, and have been since Jan. 1st, the 2005 licenses are also valid until March 31st. Don't get your information from the horses mouth, get it from his boss' mouth.
