Subject: HELP! Key & Kill switch off, motor still running!!

So headed south this weekend and we motor to our first spot. Go to turn the engine off and she's still running. Pull the laynard for the kill switch. Still running.. What is going on?? Had to resort to disconnecting the leads to the starting battery all weekend. Checked all the connections and leads. Nothing seemed wrong, anyone got a clue to what might be going on? I can't figure out why it would start with the key, but not shut off. I hope this is a cheap and easy solution

Thanks in advance.

had the same problem with my inboard jet last summer. ruined 5 days of my vacation, but it was doing it (running after turned to off pos.) for about 3 months b4.

bad ignition, caused the solenoid to go bad. both were fried, engine eventually quit starting.

i'd get it fixed asap, u won't regret it. luckily, mine was all under warranty.

good luck.

Yeah...bad starter solenoid. Had the same thing go wrong on a houseboat a few years back. It'd be the funniest thing....we'd all be sitting there and the motor would just fire up on its own! LOL! Kind of like a ghost fired it up.

It'd start and shut itself off periodically. Eventually it'd just sit there and crank and not turn itself over, but it'd keep cranking and eventually it'd kill the battery.

What had happened was the inside of the solenoid had so much corrosion going on internally that it was making the contacts on its own.

Once a new starter solenoid was installed...all was good again.

Definitely something you'll need to have fixed.

What kind of motor do you have? Depending on what motor it is could be a bad power pack or ecu. If it is a bad starter solenoid the starter would be staying engaged, easy to check, remove hood and start and make sure it does not stat engaged. Also check all ground on the ignitions system. Get your charging system checked also, when you unhook the battery when running it can ruin the voltage regulator.

The motor is an 02 Yamaha 150 Vmax HPDI. #*^@, I don't think it is under warranty anymore though. Going to give the shop a call today but it is a haul to get up there. Solenoids expensive? If not, the labor probably is....

Would I have been better turning the gas line swith off and letting it shut down that way? I didn't know how to get the darn thing to shut down so I just cut the battery supply. Is there a better way to get it to shut down when this problem occurs??

Anyone know a Yamaha guy in the Chicagoland area, close to Schaumburg??

Another thing as well, on my first run Saturday morning I was getting a much higher top end speed at WOT than last season. My RPM's were running about 500-600 higher than last season. Better to get this stuff outta the way early on I guess.....

you were running faster with higher rpm's because of the cold weather I would assume..just a guess

No...you did the right thing. If it is indeed a bad starter solenoid, it would have been trying to keep firing the motor even if you turned the gas line switch to "off." It just wouldn't start obviously with no fuel...but it's still sit there and try and turnover...eventually running your battery down and burning up your starter.

Well, just got a call from the dealership, need a new wire harness installed. A short or loose connection somewhere in the line. Sounds like a pain for installation of the new harness...

Be careful too here....

if you disconnect your batter when your motor is running (say to jump another boat with it)....when you reconnect, i've read about a diode blowing caused from reconnection.
