Location: Pound, WI | I know that there is more to fishing with a guide than just catching fish, but if you had been out with the same guide one day in each of the last three years and he has not yet put you on a legal fish, would you hire him again?

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I guided for about 20 years, and had clients who were 'snakebit' and those who were incredibly lucky. It's not just the fish in the net, it's so much more than that.
I can bet you almost every full time guide out there has had clients who have not boated a legal. If the guide has a great reputation and puts fish in the boat regularly, then his reputation speaks for itself.
DJS, if you fished with me for three days on the Goon and didn't catch a legal, would you say I don't know that water well enough to 'guide' you there? Just a question. |

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | I will stick my neck out and give you a few questions to ask your self.
Did you learn anything from your trips?
Was the conditions favorable to score on your outings?
Did the guide fish at all?
Was he a teacher and stck with you to make sure you did everything you could do to score a fish?
Did your guide give you first water and keep you in the "zone" at all times.
Did he work spots on the spots.
Was the experiance a quality one that you enjoyed?
Is the lake you fished tough and catching a muskie hard? Some lakes are easy to score and others are harder.
If you can answer yes to some or most of these questions it was not a total loss. I would ask the guide some questions about his sucess and how many client fish are caught anually.
Were these full days?

| Like Mike said...If you learned what you could from him take it as money well spent...we are talking about muskies here...
3 days getting blanked is not unheard of...
If you know the guide has put many other clients on fish just think of it as bad luck and give it another go...next time could be a big one waiting for ya!

Location: Pound, WI | Thank you for your replies. Like I said, I know it is not just about catching fish. And I have not been dis-satisfied with his knowledge of the water. But he has not taught me anything that I didn't already know the last two years, his full days are 6-6.5 hours, and I would really like to boat a fish.
As for having a good time, I always have a good time when I fish with my brother, reguardless of the circumstances. And maybe I'm just terribly unlucky, like Steve suggested.

| I had the same client for 15 years strait and he never caught a fish. He had multiple fish on every year. His 16th year he caught a tiger muskie close to thirty pounds. I guess he had to put his time in you'd say for that one. He's still one of my best clients. I have other clients that have caught fish every trip for years and years.

Location: nationwide | This may sound wierd but when I hire a guide I want the fishing to be tough because I want to see them work hard and dig in their bag of tricks to put fish in the boat. When the fish are active and hitting everything you throw it is not that hard for the guide to get you onto fish. But when things are tough that is another story, and that is when I want to know what to do.
I used to book Ray Blank twice a year for many years and never boated a legal fish (34" at the time) but if I would hear anybody say anything bad about him I would have a major problem with it. It is not necessarily the day you are with the guide that is successful, but putting what you learn later on where it pays off.

| Not gonna mention any names
But
One of the guides I fish with guided me to 6 fishless days last season.
At one point he looked at me and said
"f***, they just ain't movin. What do you think we should do?"
I will hire him again.
WHY???
1. The best guide in the world probably couldn't have put us on fish on those days
2. I guess I just like fishing with him

Location: Hugo, Mn | I have fished with one of the guides that has posted in this thread 2x and have only caught one fish (shorty). I didn't necessarily hire him to catch fish although I would be lying if I said I didn't want to catch one. I hired him more to learn since I was just starting out.
Would I hire him again? Absolutely..without hesitation. Here are some reasons why:
He worked his tail off trying to get us a fish
He was very entertaining
He was full of knowledge and freely gave it up
He took us out free of charge when he probably had other things to do with his time
He is getting a brand new pretty bass boat!!!
I now consider him a friend.

| Sworrall I would say that you would be more than qualified to guide me on the Goon.
The question as stated said "would you hire a guide if you hadn't caught a legal fish one day in each of the last three years in a row?" Hell no, I would try a different guide or choose a different body of water.
I am guessing their are plenty of talented guides in every area why keep hiring the same one?
If you do what you've always done you'll get what you've always gootten. In this case SKUNKED! Any more questions?
