Anyone ever catch a muskie on Pewaukee River (just below the lake)? I saw a few when I was fishing the river as a child (for carp), but have never attempted to go muskie fishing there now that I am older. I have heard some tales of big renegade muskies being caught on the shallow river though. Thought I would see if anyone could verify or refute.

Thanks.

The dam used to have two settings, closed and wide open. I believe that it is more regulated now.
Our MI Chapter has had reports of muskies being caught in Illinois in that river system. I don't know how they could recognise our fish, .....it must have been their Wisconsin accent!

This is one thing I have learned over the years. If there is almost any access to another body of water they, muskies, almost always will find there way through it. There are very few situations in which a dam will keep muskies from migrating down stream. The same goes for very small creeks. I know of one lake which has no connection to another across the road about 1/4 mile away and it has been reported of muskies gaining access to it. It turns out they were navigating there way through a small culvert under the road, about the size of a man hole cover, and then swimming down a small ditch.

The question is are there the numbers present to make it worth your while?

In Spring there is a migration and quite a few are up by the tunnels.

Rumor has it, most of them somehow get back into the lake ;-). They can't go any farther without help. I think most of these fish go over the dam bny accident. Muskies like current and quiet a few are just in front of the dam in Spring just ahead of the drop.

From the lake, the dam is a 7ft drop, then under the road and down 100 yards of 5ft tunnels. Most of the muskies show up around mid to late April and hang out in the hole below the tunnels. Snagging and harrasment is an issue. Lots of people keep an eye on this because we know it can be a problem.

We have been working on getting a grate or wire gate instaled. The biggest problem is who is going to clean off all the weeds every day if there was a bock put up to keep our fish in the lake. You would not believe all the red tape and crap we are jumping through to get this done.

Fishable numbers is questionable. If you would walk the river down from the dam you might score early in the season, like the first two weeks. Plenty of people working very limited areas. A float trip down the river could be very cool and should produce muskie, northerns, walleyes in limited numbers. Low water would be the biggest problem.

Any one interested I would be glad to show them the best areas and baits to catch them. The only catch is, Please put them back into the lake, it's not far, just across the street.

I have fished the river as a kid and my dad fished it when he was a kid. Lots of storys and some good fish pictures.
