A couple friends and I have decided this year we are going to skip Wisconsin and head to Mille Lacs for a Musky/Walleye bonanza in early August.

We were hoping to rough it and stay at a campground. Any campsites in the area anyone recommends? I heard that Mille Lacs has islands, can you camp on them?

Any info is appreciated.

I wouldn't look to camp there, I'd check with local camps and resorts and see if someone has an ice house onshore to rent. Those are reasonable, and really comfortable. Bonanza? You may be looking for the pot at the end of the Rainbow, Mille Lacs can be a tough son of a gun. Big water and good walleyes, but not easy by any means. Same goes for Muskies. Wind can be a bugger, Mille Lacs can work up to 4 to 5' in a hurry.

Mille lacs is not for the meek but it does have nice fish,,If your going in aug. there is a Paul Hartman trny. going on the 5+6 about 90 boats and covers the whole lake.,, Lots of places to stay most of them on line, Weeks days are much better than weekends. The northend is good that time of year also the s/w corner. Look for cabage on the brakes,,,

Early August on M.L. has been tough for me. Myself and 2 buddies used to go there for a 4 day weekend in early August every year. It was tough, But it was still fun. We did the best on the muskies by fishing EARLY am and late evening. We tried to fish walleyes when we should have been sleeping, in the middle of the day. Our best walleye bite during the day was pulling cranks off to the sides of the mud flats for suspended fish. Quality was good, numbers were slow. The best walleye bite was at night with bobbers and leeches on the rocks. If your desperate for a tug, put on a #5 shad rap and troll the 10' water across the north end until you find some smallies and then work them over, that was a blast. Good Luck!

Are those dates for Hartman's tourney on M.L. set for sure ? Do you have dates for his other tourneys?

Father Hennepin State Park near Isle has a nice campground. Mille Lacs Kathio State Park also has camping. Both places you'll have to pull your boat out at night. I'd lock all your rods, tackle, and electronics in your vehicle.

Fishing can be very tough. Mille Lacs has some tanker muskies, and they go crazy sometimes, but most times, it's tough. Like anywhere, clouds and wind helps the fishing, but the Big Pond gets BIG rollers in a hurry.
