| Hi -- Had what I hope is a good idea for a science project for my 13 year old-- raising about 25-50 muskies to release 2 local streams in north eastern Ky. The state hatchery in morehead releases about that many every year or every other year but I'm sure it would not put either stream in a "overstocked" position. Anyway my main question is assuming I could obtain these fry how long does it take to grow to size big enough to release ? They need to be at least 10-12 inches for a good survival rate ? My thoughts were to keep them in a few 10 gallon tanks until they outgrew them , release them in a small enough pond to be able to seine them out , and release whenever they get big enough. The science part would be to chart their growth, inform about disease, etc . Any of you guys done anything like this ? Thanks ManitouDan |

Location: Michigan | Sounds like a neat project. I would make sure to get permission from the KY. DNR though.

Location: Greenfield, WI | The tanks would have to be 100+ gallons and probably larger. They wouldn't grow and thrive in tanks like you are talking about. The DNR's Fisherees Expert will better help you with the specifics that you will need.
A friend raises 6 or so each year, but uses a 250 gallon tank. |

Location: So. Illinois | I've always heard you can have 1" of fish per gallon of water. |
