Location: Waukesha, WI | I just started fishing for muskies the last couple of years. My question is this: Are there some versatile, essential lures that I should have in my tackle box? I am on a limited budget now, as I am just finishing law school and have a considerable debt load! I have my boat thank God, but need to start building a lure collection.
I live in SE WI, if this helps your recommendations. My home lake is Pewaukee, as I live 5 mins away. Thanks for any info!

Location: Pewaukee, WI | Dewey, I primarily fish Pewaukee Lake and have for the past 25 years. I'll tell you some of the lures to use that you will have success on, but as long as you realize that baits are only part of the Musky equation:
1) 9" Fire Tiger Suick
2) DB 4 for trolling (primarily those that have bars on their sides)
3) Lee Lures Top H20
4) Inhaler Rattletail Spinner bait (black & white - 17/8 oz. 8")
That should give you a start. All of these should be available at Smokies Musky Shop.
With regards to bucktails, send me an e-mail and I will give you my home phone and address.
I tie bucktails and I'll pick out a couple to get you started. No charge. I'm always happy to start a struggling student out. |

Location: Pewaukee, WI | In general I'd say yes. The water turbidity (especially in summer) would dictate the use of brighter colors. |

Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | 1) Mepps Musky Killer, black with a gold or nickel blade
2) a 6-7" twitcher crank like a Slammer, Crane, Big Game
3) Suick or pull jerk
4) Deep runner...DDD, Depth Raider ect
5) Top Prop like the Top Raider
6) Walk the dog top water like the Viper that can also have an insert placed in it to make it a glider.
7) Jigs
8) Bulldawgs
You want to cover as much of the water column as possible. |
