I am relatively new to the Muskie game. I have an older Abu Garcia C3. I currently have Cortland line on it. The problem I have is that I cannot get any distance on my casts. Is this combo the problem?

I am going to buy a new reel and try Spiderwire Stealth I believe. Any suggestions as far as good reels and line combos that will help casting distance without suffering power loss?

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Check out my post on custom vs store bought rods. Not to say you have to buy a custom, but if you are suffering from poor casting performance you might not be using the right rod for the job. Also, the rod you have may not be guided correctly. Guide placement is critcal for distance.

What is the rod you are using?

Thanks

I am using a CTR muskie rod - "all purpose" - I bought it last year for $80.

I am not at home right now, so I do not know the exact model number.

Last year I switched from a collection of abu's, I have 7 of them, to Okumas Induron 400. I traded in a bunch of airline miles and bought 3 of them for free. I have no complaints yet. They are nice and smooth and cast a mile. I use Cortland spectra 50, I prefer it over power power any day. I figure power pro cost me over $155 to try. I bought 300 yards of 50 lbs power pro for $60 and spooled up 2 reels. After 1 1/2 days I lost 2 hugh river lures $80 and a burt $15 (my favorite one). The line was falling part because of the tension when moving the heavy lure through the water. Then I had to go by more cortland.
