| Hi Y'all
I want a better rod & reel that is more suited to pulling the hard pullers like lures that i should probably only troll like 13" believers,
10" hookers, etc. Do I need a lower gear ratio like 5:1? Shorter or longer rod, stiffer or a little more give?
Thanks for the advice, by the way, I'm leaning towards Gander Mtn. Rods and maybe the new ABU Garcia Record (5.3:1) due to some budget constraints, Can't afford an Avid or Loomis right now, nor a Calcutta TE.
Thanks!

| If you're talking about CASTING big baits like 10" Jakes, ripping Invaders, etc. I would go with a heavy power rod and one that is nice and long (alleviates the amount of force you'd have to put into each pull/twitch/rip/whatever). I have yet to find a good reel as I often go crazy with Invaders and wore the gears out on a C4 and two Calcutta 400s. I'm hoping my new BPS Maina reel is going to be my go-to reel (looks like a tank!). | |

| Yes, definetely meant casting,
Might have to check out the new BPS Maina reels, would you recommend the slower or faster gear ratio?
Do you know who makes those reels for them?
Thanksi

| Well, if you're talking about giant 13" Believers, 10" hookers, etc. I think you should look into something shorter with A TON OF BACKBONE. St. Croix Premier's 6'9" Heavy or a Fig Rig Extreme series 6'10" comes to mind. I know a lot of guys throw it (Premier) with BIG honkin jerkbaits. I'd say if you were throwing a lot of big cranks that you might look into the lower gear ration (4:1 vs. 5:1) if you went the route of the BPS Maina reel. I might very well be wrong, but I think Pflueger makes the Maina reel (someone here will know if I got it wrong). Hope this helps! | |

| i have the same dilemma, but don't have the money for a prof. edge from keith right now.
my thoughts are, as soon as i find a stiff enough glass or composite rod 1 pc-8'6, im butchering it down to 7'3 and putting a heavy tip on it myself. end up costing less money, and i'll have what i want.
no one other than keith is making these, so it's do or die.
