Never worried much about it here but I've heard you guys talk about it so much I've become ultra paranoid + am now afraid to go out side...if I do go fishing I biuld a fire to keep me stuff warm.[;)] At what temperature do you think they will break....I no longer use glass rods but will get some more depending on the temp. the graphite is likely to break![:(] [:sun:]

Sponge, I wouldn't worry too much about it, I've gone fishing in the cold of about 20 degrees a couple times and didn't have any problems, I think the main problem people have is when using suckers and setting the hooks so hard.

The main reason I use a rod like the Proglass series rods is I have had four high quality graphite rods to date break on hooksets with quick-strike rigs. Glass or a blend of glass and graphite is the way to go for live-bait fishing in the fall unless you are using circle hooks, because there is nohookset required with that method of live-bait rigging. I'm sure the late-fall trollers will have some insight to share on rods in the frigid late-fall temps. I haven't had one break on me yet while casting. This is just what I've experienced. Believe me I don't want to break any more. MAtt

First off Mr. SpongeMan...is "shatterage" a real word???? Hmmmmm....just cause you are "the Sponge" doesn't give you the wherewithal to make up new words...but I like it [:praise:] . This may seem like a contradiction but less expensive graphite rods will hold up better in break situations than expensive, high grade graphite. Why you then ask? High end rods are built with the graphite fibers running lengthwise....it is the only way that actually makes them a superior rod....graphite layed any other way just makes the overall rod weigh less....the action, etc.. isn't improved. That's why highend graphite rods cost so dang much....it's very time intensive and difficult to lay graphite this way...can't be done cheap. Also lower end rods tend to have more fiberglass scrim under the graphite which actually softens the way they load under strain.

Longitudinally layed graphite loads much faster under stress than fiberglass does. That's why they break on very hard hooksets with quick strike rigs. The first generation graphite Fenwick made in the early 70's was horribly fragile. We aren't looking for sensitivity in a musky rod..not like you would for walleye. Having more glass in the rod makes it a bit tougher than straight graphite. Loomis has evidently recognized this fact too because all of their new Muskie Series are a blend of glass and graphite....they don't advertise the fact but will tell you so if you ask.

Enough Pontificating,
BrianW [] [:0]

Sponge,

I have had several graphite rods break from quick strike sucker fishing in extremely cold temperatures (20's and below). I bought some $30 glass rods from Bass Pro Shops this year in order to ease my mind a little bit.

If you aren't fishing in extreme cold weather, then I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you are fishing in extreme cold temperatures, you may want to think about a glass rod just in case. Graphite are generally too expensive to take the chance with.

Sponge, check out the Classic cats from St.Croix, I got 2 last fall due to the same fear you are talking about. Althoughh it never got that cold here even through November I slept a little better. These make great trolling rods too, I was able to pick up a couple of Daiawa line counters for a pretty good price at the Chicago swap, They are both going on the classic cats. That way I can use these all year instead of just one month of the year,(trolling all year and suckers in the fall). Just my twisted way to justify buying 2 new rods, works for me.[] []

Thanks fellows. If I find myself outside at 20 degrees I'm setting meself on fire! On the east coast Doc the usage of the 3 letters "age" are quite popular + are often added to the end of a word such as "where is the foodage?"; often times the letters "ish" are also used to highly irritate family members, such as "it's coldish outsideish...seen my jacketish?"....which will send me wife into a foaming fit, especially when little sponge starts doing it...gotta get me brother on here sometime...he's worse than I am!lol... jawbone,

I picked up a couple of 7'6" Power Plus (Heavy Action) - Fiberglass - two piece rods.

I used them strictly for trolling and quick strike sucker fishing.

I can see it now. Sponge's all new rod heater, complete with it's own portable battery pack. Just be sure to caution against use near wet areas.
