Location: South Portsmouth, KY | Hey. Do any of you guys worry about the color of your leader or line when fishing in gin clear water lakes(Do ya think clear line+clear leader=more follows+bites)? Anybody have any experience with using flourcarbon leaders? Thanks for the information!!! |

Location: lansing, il | i make my own 100# flouro leaders and use them probablly 80-90% of the time! i have never had a bite off. i have caught fish that the leader was the only thing between the teeth and it has always held up good! i do switch them out alot, if i feel or see nicks on them i dont hesitate to switch them! |

| I've been using fluorocarbon leaders for the last season and a half. No bite-off or other problems. Do I get more follows in clear water than I did before using solid wire or sevenstrand? I guess it's hard to say for sure but my best estimate so far is that I may get a few more fish coming after them than I did before. In general I also like the fact that these leaders don't kink like the solid wire leaders and is probably a little easeir on the fish than either solid or stranded wire. I do still use solid wire on some of my jerk and glider baits that have better action with the wire. Other than that I'm pretty sold on the fluoro. |

| Here's is what I use. Steve Herbeck showed me this on Eagle last year and I haven't looked back since not one bite off and very easy to retie! First I am using 80# Cortland Spectron, then I double uni-knot to 80-100 Seagar Flouro, then make the leader to your desired length, then I use a Stay-lock snap and a Ball Bearing Swivel which is tied by using a single uni knot. I make my leader about 2 feet long which is better on the fish just in case they roll which the big girls like to do! and you can reel the double uni knot right in to you guides which is harmless and it makes a nice little clicking sounds which is very helpfull during night fishing it lets me know right where my lure is and when it is time to start my figure 8 hope this helps Mike |

Location: Lou's Bay on the 'goon | Does the added weight of a snap swivel vs a simple snap, give the lure a nose down attitude? Does this affect the action, or is the added weight insignificant? Is this why some use a split ring at the lure and a swivel at the mainline. I am leaning towards the Seaguar Leader tied directly to the Power Pro and just a snap at teh bait because I do think the fluoro is less visible. I dont think that fluoro gets chewed off very often. I am using the Criag Staphon 12" 80# Nickel Titanium at this time. Does anyone have any previous experience with this unit? Some threads mention crimps slipping on certain leaders.
Next time your in Lou's Bay, drop in for a beverage and bring a story.

| I have not noticed a nose down position on anything that I throw, the snap is a string ease stay lock size 4 and the ball bearing is a little smaller than the snap. I used to use a split ring instead of the berkley crosslock snap because after repeated opening and closing they would break, but since the string ease snap came out I went away from the split ring! the stay locks are made of spring steel so they are meant to be opened and closed and I have never had one open up on me or break!! |

Location: Presque Isle Wisconsin | Clear leaders be they nylon or flourocarbon will definately improve the action in clear water situations.I prefer them to be in the 24" range. If your working lures on the bottom check them often for abrasion caused by rocks and other objects.Flexible leaders like flouro may also reduce or change the action on certain baits which can be critical in the upper areas of the water column. If thats the case I usually forego using them on those particular baits. This usually occurs when an erratic action is desired and straight wire leaders will produce that action better.Additionally you dont need a clear leader at night on clear water;however as I stated its been my experience that a clear leader will help considerably in daylight hours on clear water. |

| it's hard to argue against Howie..he surely has ALOT more experience than me..AND every lake is different.
But, do you think if your lure has three #5 treble hooks hanging off it...a leader will scare them away or make them too weary to bite?
i fish clear water, i'd say..75% i fish. pretty dang clear too. we dont see the muskies make a preference to the clear leaders vs wire. (floro or mono leaders. ) straight wire gets bit just as much as the floro..maybe more.

Location: Presque Isle Wisconsin | Tom cat; Thats what makes it a great sport.Everybody has had a different set of experiences.I throw a lot of wire myself on the gin bottles but as I mentioned its usually when fishing up in the water column with baits im trying to get an erractic type action on.Maybe thats what your throwing or its justd ifferent areas and fish habits.Ive just noticed on the soft plastics which are a large part of my arsenal that the clear leaders have made a difference. No offense taken.Like I said I still learn every day Im out there. |

| Howie, you are so cool. you are right, everyone has thier own set of experiences to draw from.. AND i 100% believe every lake has a different bite and different idiosyncracties (ok,i have no idea how to spell). on some lakes, leaders do make a difference, a significant difference. on other lakes, it means nothing..
We have all been on lakes that bulldawgs kick butt....and we have all been on lakes you cant catch one a bulldawgs..each lake and area has a different bite and reacts differently to different situations.
So..for you for Muskie_Man in Kentucky..talk to your long time musky fishing locals and see what they have to say.. see if they have noticed a difference. i believe it's all relatative to what lake you are fishing!
