I've been using sheet metal but I think its going to rust. Anyone know where you can get thin sheets of stainless steel? What do you guys use for cutting your own?

Thanks,
Cool Forum!

Not that I ever bought stainless before, but...
We just had the dishwasher replaced at the nursing home that i am the Maintenance Director at. i saw that old machine hauled away, and I thought " #*^@, I wish I could have found a use for all that stainless". Try a scrap yard. even if you have to clean it up with chemicals, it's gota be way cheaper than buying new stock.

Metal SuperMarkets, but the unless you're doing "custom" shape or size you can't beat the production stuff. Those are stamped not cut and can be used straight away.

Where do you get your "stock" tails?

The ones from Stamina suck. They're so thin you have to tune them every cast.

You can get sheets of stainless at Menards. Use a large tin snips, small file, emery cloth...and leather gloves.

I work in a sheetmetal shop I will check with my buyer on monday and see what I could get stainless for cutting is free give me some dimensions and I'll get back with you late next week, would be sooner but I have school and a three year old, I'm kinda busy! What do you think 16ga? .059 if you don't know gauges I have some tails from stamina and they must be 20ga. why do you want stamped and not cut? our laser does wonderfull work.

Laser cut is cool, just most guys don't have access to a laser.

i looked at several menards, home depots, fleet farms, ace hardwares etc and didnt find stainless steel sheets in any of them. i only found aluminum and regular steel.
i was reffered to metal supermarket in roseville. they have different gauges and finishes available. they sell it by the sq ft. the gauge i picked up, 22 gauge, was $18 a sq ft i believe.
i have also heard good things about moores.

for the guys who have had them laser cut, whats the cost of getting it done? whats the usual minimum order size?

I've looked into lazer cutting a couple of times and most places that I know of dont have a set minimum amount you ahve to get cut at one time. You pay a certain amount for them to type the dimensions for the peice into the computer (which is only a one time fee for that peice alone and than its in the computer forever), and than a price for each individual peice cut out. It can get kinda pricy if you only make a few baits.

I'm working on the laser, I can call in a favor on the programmer, might cost me a case though! ;), the hard part is like castmaster said stainless is very spendy, and I can't cut brass on the laser, might try the plasma though, only problem is they are awfully small for a plasma and they have poor cut quality. look at your pacemaker tails they look like they were ground somehow, very strange pourous ends on them, nice cut though.

The pourus cut you are seeing is probably from a cnc water jet cutter. In the search for stainless look into hobby stores, they usually cary that stuff for the train and RC guys, that is where I get mine for prototyping. Good Luck Doug

my buddy Dieter cuts his own from aluminum (like on the topkicks) for larger baits and stainless steel for the small topraiders we made together. The aluminum gives a different pop (quieter) and is easier to tune. It doesn't need retuning as often as you would expect since he uses aluminum sheets of 1-1,2mm thick. He just uses the stencils from moore's lures or stamina's catalogs and enlarges or shrinks them to fit larger or smaller sized baits
