Got a question,
I was shown a suick that appeared to have a "quick release" set of hooks on it. It was the wierdest thing i have seen on a lure. 2 trebles attached to a wire with a loop at the nose. Tension was througha spring on the wire attached near the tail. The theory was upon a fish hitting and the subsequent hookset, the body of the Suick would detach leaving only the hooks in the fishes mouth. At first i thought it was someone who had tinkered with the lure but i found no bore hole where the hooks may have been.
The guy got it from his father who apparently bought it that way. Anyone ever see this before? I told him if it is real he may have something a collector might want.

My Dad and brother had a couple of those too. They were sold that way. They both ended up not liking them as they would sometimes release on the cast as the rod loaded.

I've never seen a suick like that, but I have seen some old mud puppies that had them. The 'regular' mud puppy was called the river model, presumably because the quick release model would float away with the current while you were fighting the fish. This innovation apparently never caught on, but I'm sure it caused quite a stir back in the day!

I have a buddy who has rigged several different baits in that fasion. It's sort of like a "quick strike rig" for baits. He says he likes the baits that he has rigged up like that, but it impeeds the action on other baits.

Back in the late 70's -early 80's, Suick had a 9" model woth 2 hooks rigged on a harness with a pin coming out the nose.Upon hookset, the hook rig would release from the body, leaving (hopefully) a hooked fish without a bait to throw.Exactly like the old Mud Puppy.I like the "river" model better!!!LOL. Steve:
That is exactly the lure he has. I wonder what if it considered a collectible?

I'll bet it would be on ebay, everything is a collectible there!

On the Mud Puppy wouldn't the "river" model have hooks imbedded in the body and the "lake" model be with the breakaway hook harness? This would make more sense to me as the "lake" model body wouldn't float away downstream.

Thoughts?

muskie!nut - yeah, that's what I was trying to communicate, sorry I didn't word that properly, when I said the regular one was called the 'river model' I meant that the regular one was the one w/ regular hooks.

I have an old Mud Puppy which the body detaches. I had a collecter offer $100 for it(which means it is worth more). It is in fair/used condition.
