I picked up a new 7' bucktail rod at the expo last weekend from the FigRig booth its a med action bucktail rod balanced in the handle, I set it up with an abu 5600c4 that I switched gears to the 5.3:1 to make cranking easier. Now for my question, I spooled the reel with #35 spectron line(the Idea is that I'm only using it for small bucktails and wanted to keep things on the light side)do you think the line is heavy enough? I'm starting to second guess my decision. Im using #50 on my cranking/bigger bucktail(7.6st croix) rod and topwater (6.6st croix)rod ,and #80 on my jerking (6.0 st croix)rod all with 6500tcm reels.

I don't think you would have a problem. I would just make sure before every time you go out you check for frays or kinks in the line, that would reduce you chance of boating a nice fish.

Hope this helps,

I think that 35# is plenty because you are coupling it with the proper rod. Longer rods with more flex are great for throwing small bucktails and lighter line is also a part of the equation. I also agree with making sure to check your line and retying several time a day.
I like the long rod/light line for small bucktails and cranks.

The only problem I have had with the 35# superlines is getting a backlash out...seems the stuff is harder to work with because of the thread like diameter. I use 50 or 60 across the board, including my Pike fishing rigs, Great choice in a rod, I have one and love it.[8)]

Yeti,

Congrats! Sounds like a great set up. Definitely check you line for frays and weak spots a lot. The only line I have ever run into a lot of problems with is Spectron. You have to do a lot of babysitting to make sure you don't have any mishaps. I must not have done a good job because I lost more darn lures with that line (LOL).

I know there are a lot of line posts out there but I always add my two cents when it comes to line. I am a fanatic when it comes trusting line. When you find a good one, stick with it. It is one of the strongest links in your confidence to consistently catching these fish. I use 80lb. Power Pro for EVERYTHING!

I think you'd be etter off with something like 65 or 80 power pro. Diameter doesn't make much difference when bucktail fishing, but the heavier line is much more reliable. Also you will probably find that fine diameter superbraid digs into itself under pressure, I know I did, and as a result won't use anything under 50lb PP on any if my reels with syncronised levelwinds. I use 30 PP for light Bass type fishing but then I'm only using lures up to 3/4oz and the reel's either a Curado or a Morrum with a disengaging levelwind.

Hope that helps

I would run the 50 pound Spectron you your set up.
Even with the smaller stuff the 50 pound would work fine.
I get a little nervous with that light of pound test, one small knick and
you could have trouble.
