Got my 2002 updated copy of FHS Cave Run Lake map. Started looking at it last night. Now have lots of questions. I'll start with the easy ones.

1. What is the closest launch to Tony Grant's Muskie Mountain Lodge? Curious where I'll be starting from.

2. How well defined are the river channels. The map makes it look like you are running a forest the entire time when in the river sections. How far upriver can you safetly run W.O.T.? How well marked is it?

3. In March, how far up the Licking do you need to go or can you go to find ski?

Cave Run doesn't look to be real friendly for quickly running to other sections of the lake due to its long, narrow shape with different fingers. Also, everything looks the same on the map, so its tough to put together a "game plan" prior to launching the boat. Bottom line, there is a lot more water than I expected... especially considering it is only 8000 acres. Didn't realize I could be 24 miles from the dam. That is a LONG 8000 acres. Any suggestions???

LOL NWR!!! Stuff always comes back to haunt us! Not to worry Jason....FSF has a "map addition" for a small fee plus there are fish everywhere in the lake. I think there is a launch across from Tonys place also. The main thing I believe will be the water temp/condition(high/low)....gelling will be complete as you become one w/ the surrounding shoreline + latch onto that first buck toothed fish![;)] [:sun:]

Guys
RAMPS
Longbow is 1 1/2 miles from Lodge
Clay Lick is 5 miles from Lodge
Bangor is 5 miles from Lodge

The river channell is not marked and can be very dangerous, wouldn't advise anyone to run it that doesn't know it.
All other areas are pretty safe, Beaver Creek is the clearly marked with channell bouys so full speed is no problem.
Bangor is not a bad spot to hunt spring muskies but again it is stumpy and gets very little March pressure.
Last year both the PMTT and Cabin Fever Challunge was dominated by fish from the Beaver Creek area, this is normal for early saeson.
At the far end of the lake near damm is Scott's Creek also a great early season spot.
The CAVE is not as big as it looks, from Longbow Marina to the damm is about a 15 to 18 minute ride at 40mph with no hazards.
Search out creeks in the backs of coves and you will find muskies.
Looking forward to a great time with all you guys.
Hope this helps

Hey, Tony, while you're at it, tell us a bit about our lodging: what sized beds, is there room for an air mattress on the floor between the beds?
Where's the nearest grub, especially breakfast? Is it quicker to get to you from the Interstate or come thru Morehead if I'm coming from Ashland? thanks, m

Jason

You cant run the Licking river on plane...its a mind field. Even at a slow speed the bottom of your boat will lift up every once in a while. The water is real dark in there too and you cant see the stumps.

Now Beaver Creek on the other hand has good visablity when at normal pool and you can run it wide open as long as you understand what side of the red and green bouys you should be on.

Most of the Coves are no wake so you dont have to worry too much there also..

Dont worry.. if you are afraid of a ding in your new Ranger... Just kick it before you go and get it done with, I always do that with my new cars...LOL

Last year Worrall was yelling at me.. I had my Tuffy right up in a mess of stumps. I could care less they all buff off. I just want to catch fish. So dont worry its easy to remove scratchs and scuffs from glass boats.

Hopefully the water level will be fine and we all can have a good time, pitching and catching.

Dont forget your digital camera's, we are going to upload fish caught right back on the site from Tony's.

Hmm, great idea Sponge, supplemental navigational maps after I remove the bouys all the way up the Channel to Longbow! I'll cut you in for 10% but am still waiting for the $125 for the specially marked SBSP version of the Cave Run Map for Fishing From the Left Side of the Boat(this is of course the version that has a picture of Neked W Virginia Gurls on the cover, I was gonna get some Cheeseheads for this special edition but those durn gurls can readin and write up there, and wanted money not shine)send that money to me right away.

I have seven strategies for fishing cave this spring #1 some kind of mounted platform on the front of Greg T's boat. It would have to be mounted far enough out so that I could poach all the water all the time. He is a gol danged vacumn cleaner and you don't want to fish behind him.

#2 shore fishin, keep castin the same bait in the same place until the wandering herd of musky meanders by and I catch one.

#3 dock fishin, always a couple of good ones hanging around the docks and if what Sworrall says is true they are so stupid their survival should only be limited to a few minutes near the docks so it might as well be me that catches them.

#4 secret

#5 secret

#6 secret

#7 bring reall good food to the lake and then run around looking for somebody with a fish and trade them food for a photo opportunity, after all perception is reality is it not?

anybody have any other ideas let me know, I am trying to get away from gut feelings and go with pure science this year, these sound pretty scientific don't they?

Jason,

Bring your map with you when I speak at the C & R muskie club here in Feb (What day was that again). I will be happy to mark your map with the 8 days of knowledge I have on that body of water. I have not fished many days..but I do know how to fish most of the spots and I can run the lake safely.

Jason, I think the club meeting is THIS Tuesday. I'll try to remember my map.

Tony, thanks for exlpaining which ramps we will most likely be using. Knowing we have to run Beaver Creek at the end of the day will really help planning a "milk run".

The Licking River REALLY caught my eye as a place to explore... but sounds like a tough place for the unfamiliar to navigate efficiently and effectively.

The rest of the lake seems fairly simple to "read", so considering I only have two days to fish... that's where I'll concentrate my efforts.

Its gonna be fun to compare notes with everyone back at the lodge and see how different people attack the lake.
