Discuss the trade here; talk about the finer points of Basement Bait building and custom painting. Beav will love this forum, and he's offline with a computer problem! Thanks to muskienightmare for the concept and request. Enjoy!

Richard,
Try a sea sponge.Real uneven and jagged like.Dip it into black and lightly apply to bait.Makes the splotchy marks. Hope this helps. Steve

I do all of tiny marks on my painted version with an airbrush. I have tried the sponge idea and had trouble with it.........maybe it's time to try again.

Jed,

I also had problems with the sponge. That is why I use some of the other things that I mentioned.

Give a paper towel a try. Crumple it up and dip in paint on a cardboard cutout and dab it on another spot to work in the paint and even it out.

I do my crappie patterns using a short piece of rope (the white braided kind that is usually sold as anchor rope...NOT NYLON). I fray the ends a little bit and then just dab them in paint and then dab the end of the rope where i want my spots. This gives a nice irregular broken up pattern.

This particular lure was done by my painter, known on these boards as Cast-n-Blast. I'll see if I can get him to post more of an explanation here. The guy is awesome!

Thanks G. The crappie is quite easy, but you have to be a bit careful not to load up the sponge with too much paint. I also like to dab the loaded sponge onto another piece of paper to get the excess paint out of it so as not to get too much paint on the lure. Find a sponge that has a varied texture to it, I like one that has smaller points as well as larger openings on it. Real sea wool sponges only. Paint your silver, then a lighter spray of purple, and when dry, sponge on your black flecks, put the red on for gills and black down the back and you're done!

t'ill most paint was off.

looks like a bleeding crappie ....... I'd say you've completed your task. Might try to find a "finer" sponge to get smaller "specs" ....
