Location: North East PA , 20 mins from Chautauqua | I'm no expert troller, but I run mono on all my trolling rods . Trilene big game is great stuff , I have also ran the "red" cajun stuff with good results I used to run 20lb test but I think I'm going to bump it up to 30lb this year . I also run three foot long 80lb flourocarbon leaders too. You need to have some stretch in your line when that muskies slamming a bait going 6 MPH and pulling against a rod locked into a rodholder !

Location: Ames, Iowa | Ferd's got it right. I use 50 lb. Big Game (it was cheap and the only size available to buy at the time), and a 30 inch homemade Sevenstrand leader which probably should be longer.

I found that if you go to heavy with the line you will have to let more line to get you baits down where you want them. I like to keep the baits closer to the boat so they will react when I turn or change speeds. The longer the line length the less effective the changes are.
Short lines produce more fish than long lines. I like to run a copolomar line. I use the P-Line Premium line in 17 to 20# with walleye planner board rods and LC27 line counters. These lighter set-ups have out produced all of my other combo's.
If I am going to fish over weeds I will not run these set-ups. I run 80# Power Pro and set my drag on the light side. The fish only needs to get hooked not stopped. Once the fish is hooked I adjust for the conditions. Sometimes you need to crank them in and sometimes you can enjoy the fight. Depends on the depth and amount of weeds.

Location: Racine, Wi | I do pretty much the same thing as Mike. I run 20# P-line on some rods, and 25# Big Game on others when trolling "clean" structure. I then use my normal casting equipment when trolling over thicker structure, or heavy weeds.
When I am dragging bigger baits (10+") I use my casting equipment as well, as I just have more confidence that it will hold up better to the constant pull from the baits. |

Location: Barrington, Il | For trolling small baits like Hooker Shads and lil Ernies, we use 30# Magna thin. For larger baits in the fall in Canada we use 50# Stren High Impact. We also run 100# Power Pro right off the back of the boat in the propwash.
