I've hired a few.....I think it's the best way to learn a lake and new techniques.

What guides have you hired that you really enjoy being in the boat with??

For me, I've always had fun fishing out of Tony Grant's place down on the Cave (Tony G., Gregg T., and Dave C.)
Of course, I have a good time fishing with Thorpe!!!

I just talked with Frank Dimarciantonio on the phone, and I look forward to fishing with him this summer.

Who do you have a good time fishing with???

Without question.....Jim Saric

I first fished with Jim on June 12th 1997. I learned more in one day of fishing with him then I have fishing for muskies in 11 years. OK maybe that's a little much, but after one day with him I had a real good understanding of were muskies hold and why. A lot of guides take you fishing, but Jim takes the time to teach you. I have fished with him many times since and he is still teaching me.

His advice has help me place in the top 10 of many tournaments. Oh yea, the first guide trip with him we caught 8 fish. We also have had 9 and 5 fish days. A great learning experience.

Steve Worrall and Dave Dorazio both are great. They know their muskie fishing and will keep you in stitches all day in the boat.
A word of warning, the best defense is a good offense, and you had better have a thick skin, because the teasing may be of "Olympic" proportions.
A day in the boat with each should be mandatory for all of us!

I have had the distinct pleasure of fishing with
Joe Bucher
Doug Johnson
Rick Kreuger

I have learned more from these three guy's than I could have in a lifetime fishing alone.

Gregg Thomas in MN and KY (www.battlethebeast.com)
Thad Hinshaw in Central IL (www.evergreenmuskie.com)

Both treat you like kings, know the water like the back of their hands, and have some of the most entertaining fish stories to keep you occupied when things are slow.

I had the chance to fish with two guides this summer.

Dan Craven a couple times on Leech. Very good fisherman and just a nice guy. Showed me more about Leech lake in a couple hours then I had learned in several years.
Gary Bartlett on LOTW. I cannot believe how hard Gary worked at getting my dad and I a fish. My dad got one and that is why we were there.

For what it is worth, both guys come highly recommended by me.

Well I have only been with 4 guides.......

Chris Walker was by far the best of Indiana Fishing Adventures Guide Service (www.indianafishingadventures.com)
Mike Ice of Ice Man's Guide Service also Indy Lakes
Al Nutty Lake Kincaid
Mike Hulbert Indy Lakes

All are decent guys but fishing with Chris Walker has taught me so much, since he fished the FLW Tour he can relate to a converted bass guy like myself and fishing out of a Ranger 520 bass boat is something when catching musky plus he guides the White River in the summer for smallies when it is too hot to musky fish (bad for fish some guys tell me). He uses a Jet boat to fish that river quite a site....

I've only fished with a few (Steve Heiting, Jim Saric, Dave Dorazio, Daryl Neibauer, Matt Pohlman, Rick Whitehead) but I would say I learned the most from my day with Jim Saric. Jim focuses on teaching and I learned a lot. He runs his trolling days like a drill seargent and you learn. I have had the best times with Rick Whitehead - a great guy to just BS on the water with.

Haven't fished with the "big names", but a local Illinois guy for the Fox Chain and Madison is Sean Bermingham. Used to speak at the Chicago Show but they nudged him out because of "contract" issues. Great guy, good guide.

Also makes awesome rods. Look for his booth at the show.

Hey guys ... this is my first post.

I am a life-long bass fisherman and was introduced to Musky this past October by a great guide ... Chris Walker. I agree with PGAschultz on Chris. For my first time out, things looked bad as no one boated a musky all day or the day prior. But, Chris put us on them and we boated 3 and had over 12 follows. My first time out and I got a 36" and lost another after a good fight. ANother guide pulled up late that day and told us that they had only 2 follows. Chris nows how to fish and where to find them. He is also a great teacher ... patient and sincerely dedicated to his clients. By the end of the day, it felt more like fishing with a friend than a guide.

Never hired a guide before but would have to say that my favorite 'guide' is Chad 'spirit world' Cain. Although this absolutely KILLS me to say this.... Chad might be one of the best muskie fisherman on the planet. I filmed him guiding clients this year and was blown away not only by how many fish he caught but how hard he work for his clients. I mean this guy fricken works HARD for his clients. never seen anything like it. Chad is a freak. He had 300 muskies in his boat again last year.....

I haven't hired a guide for several years but have gotten to know some awesome people who are guides who I really enjoy speaking to.

Phil Schweik "Nicest guy in the business"
Pete Hilman "Simplest guy in the business"
John Sparbel "Happiest guy in the business"
Craig Lemmer "Strongest guy in the business"
Todd Forcier and Jason Schillinger - These river rats really care about their water
Mike Lazers "Mr. Professionalism."
Steve Worral "The myth, the legend"
The guide formerly known as "Gare", I think he's just a symbol now
Jason Sloan "Best row troller I know"
Paul Klein "Best open water fisherman, period."
Brett Jolly "Mr. Raging Bull"
Not really a guide but Dennis Lappen - The only guy that wears penny loafers while fishing.
Bill Sandy "Mr. sausage fingers"
Dennis Radloff "Most encouraging success story in fishing"

I haven't fished with many guides, but agree with Justin on Paul Klein. I fish with him at least once a year, and the man is great at open water! Not only do you laugh your butt off all day long, but he knows where to find the fish in the abyss. I don't know another fisherman, let alone a guide that will put as much time on the water in a day as Paul does. I only hope someday I can be as good as he is!

I've only fished with one guide but it was a great experience both times. Terry "Ace" Sjoberg on Big V is a great guy and a passionate angler. He and Musky Tom really work hard to know that lake on both ends. I guess they must enjoy it, eh?
I will add that nearly every guide I've visited with has been very helpful as well as encouraging.

I really had a good time with each of the guides I have hired so far because they have been fun/good guys, they have been willing to educate, and they ALL had GREAT stories.

Dave Dorazio: Dorazio=Chip, 'nuff said. I was green then (still?) and he even went into detail on terminal tackle stuff
Tom Dietz: very patient, wanted to teach
Roger Sabota: smart man, will share info and pick on the midget
Craig Swenson: if you haven't heard of him and you can find him, he will be worth your while

Guys that guide/guided, that I have fished with under other circumstances that were a lot of fun and sources of info....

Jim Saric: you might get to see the "pythons" if you fish with him in July
Steve Jonesi: Kly outing 1, Jonesi got stuck with me. Great dude and you'd think he fished Okauchee his whole life
Steve Heiting: He was just nice to me because my melon is bigger than his (not by much)
John Stellflue: What can I say, he's a good guy because he has the good fortune of thinking like me
Greg Morse: only guided for a year or so, not a false bone in his body, we've always caught or had big fish going

** PointerPride, do not let JonnySled fool you, I taught him everything he knows

Steve Worrall...."We're talking and we can't shut-up! And neither will that little freakin' dog in "Yapping Dog Bay". Always a pleasure when us old farts get together.

Mike Koeppe......Like jumping in the boat with someone that I've known my whole life. Always a good time, whether we catch fish in the first 15 seconds or not. Never run out of stuff to talk about.

I can't say enough good things about Bill Sandy, Blackhawk Island LOTW. That guy can just flat out fish! I have to force myself to fish instead of watching him work a monster Suick through a fallen tree like a hot knife through butter or taunt a big girl into action with the way he dances a crankbait to life. He has definatley shown me how to use several baits to there fullest potential (not that I've pulled it off yet). Tons of excellent tips and pointers all day long and it is a long day of fishing with Billy. I can't remember ever coming in with the sun still up. There is never a question as to where I will be for one week in every July (and I'm trying like hell to do a couple days in September/October). Billy puts you on BIG fish every time out.

Crank .... the perch picture was for real, but on Fence Lake ... slow gliding a reef hawg through .... can you say a "pile" of baitfish! ... that was amazing. i marked a monster on my graph that day that must have had too much better to eat than my reef hawg ... that place scares me the fish are so big ... almost makes you think you're in Minnesota! .... Gare has certainly had some time on the water ... lol

I have the pleasure to fish with Captain Mike Keop (Extreme One) numerous times and you learn something new everytime out.

Frank Walsh from Oak Island LOTW was great, plus the donation of the trip for the Kly Memorial. If you want to pound all day he is the guide. Knows the lake well, hang on to something in the boat.

Steve Cady will keep you laughing even though your fishing a sewer. Plus the view of the full moon in Minnesota will scar your brain forever.

Looks like some of you have spent more money on guides than I have rigging my entire boat.

For northern Minnesota lakes:
Jim Burke
Brad Banaszak
Mike Marra
Daryl/Deron Roche

And they'll take you fishing for free and put fish in the boat.

Jimmy Burke's ability to put you on big muskie is not only in MN. The last 3 DAYS I fished with Jim in WI, I landed a 41.5, 43.5 and 46. By the way, those are the first 3 muskie I have ever caught in that order. Couldn't have done it with out you Jim! My game WAS golf, but since I landed those 3 muskie, I am "hooked"! I'm ready when you are Jim. Canada is next!!

Fence Lake? No, no big ones in there! I remember a few years ago when that guy caught the 40 plus pounder out there on a bulldawg late in the year. Photo looked like the things dreams are made of. There are a few "not so well known" lakes in that area that hold fish that make your head spin. I wish I had more time to fish in that area like I use to. I've got a cool video of a 46" tiger we caught over that way that went airborne in October. Very cool! Just imagine, only 5 months to go! Might not make it. Feeling a Kinkad trip coming on in the next months.

I’ve had the pleasure and good fortune to fish with some of the great old time guides in the Hayward area in my younger years.
Paul Quail
Kenny Eck
George Gorski

And now a days good friend Terry Peterson, learned a lot from all of them!
