What is ONE bit of advice you'd give to someone whose muskie experience (years/time on the water) is less than yours?

Mine: You can only cast one lure at a time.....so learn the ones you have before you buy more.....there are 8 million other things that contribute to catching muskies BEYOND throwing the blingiest new lure you can find!

learn the proper way to do a figure 8...I've had more newbies in my boat that despite teaching them how to do it failed to do it when a musky was hot behind the bait in the correct way....how many of us have had our guests literally stop the bait in it's tracks and say "ew, there's one, look at that"....doh! do the figure 8 right and it will put more fish in your boat.

Yeah...the whole figure 8 tactic is crucial. And another thing to add to that when doing the figure 8 is: DO NOT SLOW DOWN! I can not seem to get that through my bro-in-laws thick skull. He's alwasy slowing down to the point where the musky looks like it's a circus Seal doing a balancing act with a ball on it's nose. If that fish is hot...there's no way a fisherman can move that bait faster than the speed a muskie is able to achieve when it's in the striking mood! Speed will only get 'em fired up even more as it appears to be a bait fish fleeing the scene to save it's own life. Oh..and keep those figure 8s big and wide on the ovals.

Another piece of advice I would tell a new person that's come into this sport is that it's a sport that will test and try your patience to the max. This isn't bass fishing and it's not bluegill fishing where you can most likely bank on action anywhere at anytime. Be Patient. Enjoy yourself. Enjoy the outdoors. Sit back and relax...and be patient; it'll happen.

If just starting out, buy the best equipment that you can afford. This includes not being afraid to spend some serious ching on terminal tackle and line. Remember that your only connection to that fish of a lifetime is your tackle. DON'T SKIMP buy the best you can for the $$$ you have.

PS. sharpen those hooks, a lot.

Have an idea! Don't go out and just haphazzardly fling lures around until your arms hurt.
Go out each day with a game plan, a way to cover water effectively, and be ready to change at a moments notice when Plan A doesn't work. Do your homework before you get on the water. Pick your spots and how you think you should attack each one.

All good points:

Figure 8
Set the hook
Wait to feel the weight of the fish before you set the hook on topwaters
Keep your line tight when you have a fish on

Boat control is huge, if you cannot present a bait, nothing else really matters. Next would be lake selection, pick the right lake at that time for those conditions.

that would be the start of my advice to a newcomer but the rest of the line would be...so if at all possible, fish with a partner!

You will double the fish contacted, and double the learning curve.

My one piece of advice would be to have CONFIDENCE and believe in what you are doing. Always have a positive attitude and visualize a fish hitting your bait on every cast. Don't worry about the weather, can't do anything about it anyways ~ it is what it is....
Fish are caught everyday so before you even launch your boat believe that it will be you that is going to catch fish.

CONFIDENCE !!!!

Patience, Patience, and more Patience!!!! It only takes one fish to make a great day and that fish can just as easily come in the first ten minutes of an 8 hour day or the last ten minutes. Lack of focus leads to lack of fish and nothing causes you to lose your focus more than impatience.

At daybreak, slowly motor away from the ramp 14 ft. and engage the neutral gear. Once the vessel has come to a complete stop, place a medium sized, 3 legged box turtle on yer bow w/ a slice of tomato and have yer rod in hand... most often the terrapin will pause and raise his/her head after that first bite; at this time cast in the direction that the turtle's head is pointing and HANG ON! This time honored practice has worked for generations in the south, and properly cared for, the same turtle can provide years of service; all that is needed is a shoe box, some clover and occasional exercise for yer pet. An occasional snow cone will also heighten the reptiles' ability to mark fish, so keep this in mind when planning a trip...

Sponge, I'm upset! VERY UPSET!
First off, why did you take my turtle?
Secondly, it is terribly cruel to take his fake leg off thereby taking advantage of his disability and drawing attention to his short coming and absolutely crushing his self-esteem. All the other turtles will be ridiculing my three legged fish detector!
And whatever comes after secondly, you have exposed my only magical muskie secret for all the world to see. Now I will be just another muskie hunter with a three legged box turtle on the bow of my Tuffy Esox Magnum!

Thanks ALOT ex-buddy!

Gracias Mikester; same to thee! Sorry Stever, but it was time to literally let the turtle outta the box. Besides, most peeps have neither the patience nor the faith to subdue and train the 'tile properly, and few realize the sensitivity these gentle creatures posess, thus the average fisher peep gives up much too soon on this stunning and productive method. I've recently produced a CD titled "Trusting Turtles", which should give new users the confidence and know hows to persevere during turtle training and getting to know one another. Also included are tips on the various types of shoe box homes, air hole placement in the lids, proper discipline techniques, and many other useful hints on turtle maintenance. Few folks realize that by duct taping a hand warmer to the shell and placing pop bottle caps on their feet that the creatures can also be used to locate fish laden spots on ponds and lakes during ice over!
I understand that some readers may become angry w/ the fact that a 3 legged turtle is used, but having lost too many 4 leggers crawling over the front of the boat, you can understand the reason; a 3 legger generally just travels in a circle, and lacks the ability for leverage. The turtles we now use are bred strictly for 3 leggedness; turtle leg traps were banned in 1971. I run a small company called TPI(Turtle Prosthetics Institute) that produces various missing turtle parts that enable the turtle to function normally during the off season, and this concept has gained vast acceptance in the animal rights community. Me goal is to see a turtle in every boat by 2009; by working together, this dream can become a reality in our life time...

Mr. Sponge, I now see the rationale that you are using in your quest of the propigation of muskie finding turtles. Your intentions may be noble, but the question still remains.........when do I get my previously secret fish finding turtle returned to me?.....
Don't try to substitute another less trained turtle because I will know the difference!

Remember key experiences. Use past success regarding presentation, boat control, lure type etc etc., and duplicate to up your odds on successive trips on that and similar waters. A 6th sense of what to naturally do could/will eventually develop when faced with varied conditions that resemble those from memory bank and you won't even know it.

If possible don't be afraid to fish different types of lakes. Diversify your knowledge of water so when the going gets tough on one system you can have the confidence to jump to another if you are within close proximity of other muskie water.

I think fishing with new people helps a lot. I fished w/ Reef Hawg once and Muskynightmare 4 times this past season. Jason gave me confidence to use a bait I hardly ever threw and ended up catching a bunch of fish on it later in the season. I helped Rob learn how to fish gliders and he caught his first musky on a glider on our last trip. He also showed me a new lake and I got my biggest that day and also had my first 3 fish day in WI.

Matt,
You mean stay away from folks like Gary Roach, Carl Grunwaldt ( yes, he fishes muskies ALOT) and maybe Gary Parsons or Keith Kavajecz? Crash Mullins? Pretty broad brush stroke there. It's a requirement of many sponsor companies that one wear that shirt at public appearances, tournaments, and even sport shows. I guess I wouldn't 'die laughing' talking to Crash about Cave Run Muskies at a Muskie show or a PMTT, but that's me. Mr. Roach has boated a few muskies in his day, as have Kavajecz and Parsons, and those folks will forget more fishing related information than most of us will ever have the opportunity to learn, so I'd not discount them too awful much.

Keep an open mind, listen to the ideas and concepts of the 'best of the best' and the 'new to the sport', they just might know something you don't that could help put the next Muskie in the Frabill.
