Location: Brookfield, WI | When you buy a reel for a new rod do you consider what the rod will be used for? Would you put a different reel on a 8' H compared to an 8' MH. How about a 7'3" jerkbait rod? Are some better for casting bigger baits? I'll be new to this game next year and after doing some research I ended up ordering those three custom Diamondback Rods from Professional Edge. Now they'll need reels. There are obviously many good reels available, Calcuttas, Diawa Lunas, Abus, etc., but I'm wondering if certain brands work better for different applications? Or do the top reels do everything well? Any input would be appreciated as I'll be looking around at the Tri-Esox show when I pick up the rods.
Happy Holidays to everyone!

Location: Des Moines IA | I'd go with a higer gear ratio reel for the jerkbait rod, like 6:3to1 (abuC4) picks up lots of slack line.
For the MH I'd go with a 5:3to1 (AbuC3, or 5) with a power handle, good speed for cranks, power handle for burning bucktails.
For the Heavy, even lower like a 4:1to1 (Old Abu 7000) great for Big baits, 10 inch jakes, Mag Dawgs, Gliders.

Location: Ames, Iowa | I'll second the nod for Dick Moore. He will take your order over the phone if you have a catalog, or explain what he has if you don't. I used the .051 precut bright wire for bucktails. He has all the fixins to make anything.
