How important is this feature? I see it in all three of my Abu-s, but don't see it in some reels that are thought of as high or even higher quality. It seems that returning the line from whence it came during retrieval allows for better flow off the reel during the next cast.

Its more important to have the non-disengaging level wind on the wider spooled reels such as the 6500 series reels than it is with say a 4500 series reel. Because of the width of the spool if a wide one doesn't remain engaged it will put some hard angles on the line coming off the spool making it more likely to backlash.

The way I see it a sychronized level wind is very important on a reel size 6 or bigger. On a size 4 or smaller I would prefer that the level wind does dis-engage during the cast. And on a size 5 it is a horse a piece, go with either one.

I personally like the levelwind to stay engaged, I think for heavier baits you do not want uneven spooling and odd line angles coming off the spool. Unfortunately not many reel makers do this on all their reel sizes.
