Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I fish it regularly. Wabigoon (an impoundment) has a tremendous Pike population, and some real trophy Pike, too. It's easy to catch a dozen or more a day that are nice fish, with a 45" or better possible. Walleyes are easy, main islands, reefs, and weedlines are good, trolling is even better. Smallmouth bass are now distributed throughout the system, which wasn't the case twenty years ago. 4 and even 5# fish are fairly common.
The muskies are special there. I've encountered some spectacular muskie angling on the Goon, and have had rough trips, too. Even on a terrible trip, you should have a couple shots at a really good fish. This isn't numbers water, 5 or more in a week is pretty good, but if the fish are on, seeing a 50# class fish is not unexpected. Goon fish during July and August are not too hard to find, just fish current breaks in the slop, wood, and rock/weed transitions, and remember to hit everything from 1' to 6' carefully, you'll get on the pattern. Bucktails, gliders, topwater, the standard stuff get's it done, but spinnerbaits shine in the heavy slop.
The north side of the lake has alot of development, as does the north side of Larson Bay. Houses, folks on docks, etc, but the big girls are there if you don't mind fishing near people. If you do, a short ride south or east will take you to the Canadian bush country, no houses or people, just trees, rocks, and wildlife. There are some smaller lakes that are day trips off Wabigoon, Butler, Trap, etc. Fun, but not something I do alot because I have so many good fish going within 5 miles of camp. Dinorwic is east, great water with tremendous potential, but I stay at the best camp I could find, which is Indian Point clear on the West end of the system. Location there is protected from big winds so you can get out easily no matter what, is close to the main river channel, and is located close to Contac and Larson bays, favorites, plus the Western Arm, off the river channel but also a great muskie area.
The water has cleared alot in the last ten years, but this isn't a shield lake with pristine clear water. It's clay particulate, and cloudy as a result. I think that helps keep the fish shallow, and is an asset!

I was not driving!! I hadnt even been to the HAwg Trough before. That was all Lambeau man.
