Once again I'm probably in the minority here. I guess you can do whatever you want. I just think it is almost irresponsible.
We just had two people die in Sheboygan County venturing on to the ice this weekend. Why would I care? My brother is a firefighter for a city department. It is those guys who will have to risk "their lives" to drag yours out of the water.
Like I said you can do whatever you want and why would care what some "mook" on the internet thinks but that is my two cents.

Ice fishing on thin ice really isn't that big of a deal.

You just have to be prepared.

Never fish alone, never stand right next to each other, always have safety picks on your arms, have a good rope easily accessable, a change of clothes, especially socks, and a blanket.

Hell I fell through a few years ago over 16' of water and still fished all day. I just had to ring out my socks, didn't have any extras that day.

Those posting negatively must not be experienced ice fisherman. So many people make a big deal out of going out on the ice.

The spot in the background of the pic is where I fell through while setting up in the morning.

Joe,
There's a reason people make a big deal out of fishing on the ice. You fell through didn't you? Please be careful. Don't be foolhearty. We DO care about each other. That's a good thing!

Well, no one will be doing that up here for a couple days. Temps have been in the 40's with rain. Most of the snow is gone I think, haven't been out of bed except for a couple hours last night for a couple days, had a nasty case of the stomach flu. It's warm out there now, and raining.

In other words, in terms of fishing reports, Sworrall could give you the straight poop, but it would be watered down a little?

So people actually catch fish through the Ice? How do you cast?

Seriously folks, if you're walking out on Ice like what you see in the first photos here you are taking your life in to your own hands and you're also a complete IDIOT. I love fishing but I love living a whole lot more. You have no idea how tough ice cold water makes things it's not just a simple as using your hand spikes to get yourself back to shore. If it's less than 4 inches stay off and do yourself and your local firefighters a favor.

To each their own, but I would not risk being on ice that is less than 4 inches thick. The lakes that I fish are littered with springs, and if there is a little snow on top, you cannot see them. With 2 - 3 inches of ice, you'd go right through if you hit one. get any more snow on top and things ar really unsafe.

All I ask of anyone who decides to venture out is to wear a lifejacket and definitely go with someone. Always keep a good poly rope tied to you and let it drag behind you. The ice picks are a good idea as well.

Just be safe and spread your weight out. First ice is always good, but better to catch fish when you are on top of it... Be careful out there..it's early yet.

Yup.....to each their own. First ice is thin ice and thin ice is dangerous. The number one rule with first ice is never be the first one out. Joes first ice survival list is a good start if you must get out on the ice when it is that thin. He did leave out a very important item........a life jacket. Even if you go through with ice picks, and have a buddy to toss you a rope, there is no guarantee. You may go under and come back up under the ice. It happens every year to some stupid idiot who had to be the first one out.

First ice is an adventure......be safe and wear a lifejacket!!!!
