I have a chance to buy a used auto pilot. 54lbs, 24v. I'm wondering if it has enough snort to push a 17' ranger 680T. Money is an issue, and I can get into it for $175. It's the old style Pilot and am also wondering if there are any breakdown issues with them. I know it would be nice to have a 74lb'er on it but it's not in the budget right now and am wondering if the 54 would be adequate for now

It will move it, but is going to be very underpowered on windy days.

I would suggust getting a larger pound thrust.

You will need on one on windy days for sure.

I have a 65# 24 volt Minnkota Powerdrive with Autopilot on my 17' Tuffy DeepV and it handles big waves and wind no problem. The 60" shaft definately helps too.

I have the old style on my tuffy esox mag for sale and it only has 48lbs of thrust 24v. but it is more than adequate for that boat BUT the mag does not catch alot of wind either because its so low to the water. If the ranger sits low and doesn't have high sides I would think you would be fine with the 54 thrust. Also I have not had any problems with mine breaking down or the autopilot going wacky and it's been on the boat since new.

I think mskyhter is right, I think that if your boat does not have high sides you might do all right, but I would highly suggest waiting and possible looking around on ebay or other sights for something that has a little more power. Because like someone mentioned, you will manage just fine on not so windy days, but you get 15 to 20 mph winds and that will be different story. I tell anyone that is looking at getting a trolling motor to always go at least one size larger than recommended, because that is one thing that just *ucks if your underpowered!
