Does anyone have any thoughts on keeping boat batteries in the boat through the winter? I have the boat stored in a garage with charging capabilities, and I figured I would plug it in every so often. But would it be better to pull my three batteries out and store them in the basement? Just thought that if I can keep them in the boat, in hopes of saving time in the spring but I'm not sure if the below freezing temps during the winter would effect them. Any suggestions would be great.

As long as you have a good charge in the batteries, they won't be harmed at all stored in the rig.

Dont leave em out in the cold. Charge once a month or so.

Actually the best place to store them is in the cold. However, if they get discharged they will freeze. So just keep them charged and full of water. I've left mine plugged into the onboard charger all winter already and didn't have to add any water in the spring.

Something to think about. I had an on board charger go bad once and it fried both batteries. I didn't get a recall notice on the charger for two years. Seems they started some fires. So I no longer leave my charger plugged in all the time. If you leave the batteries in the boat plug them in for a few hours maybe once / month. I personally yank them and put them on a board in the basement, it's pretty cool down there, and I hook them up to a slow charger once every month or so during the winter. This also forces me to go through and clean all the connections in the spring prior to putting them back in the boat. Works for me.

I run Optima's in my rig yet I still pull em out of the boat for the winter. I charge em before I store em and give em a charge mid winter. They are maintainance free and I am sure I could leave em, but old habits are hard to break. Dave Jonesi
