My waters are all stuffed with shad and they still eat. One thing I have felt about fishing shad waters is the the muskies tend to be frequent, small meal feeders, and are still susceptible to a bigger meal presentation. If they preferred shad to all other food resources, I would never catch a fish without imitating the bait much more than what I do. If you fish objects, you will find that a close presentation will still catch fish. Note most of the fish I catch come up in an almost casual roll, to take the bait, and rarely see the run and kill type of hits I see in WI. My fishing from now until spring will be for obese specimens that have plenty of nutritional stores for the winter, and feeding is not a pressing need. They become very conditional in their eating, unlike earlier in the season, but they still bite and it doesn't have to be a shad bait. I do not make structural presentations much due to method preferences, but from how I interpret their behaviour, I would think that structural presentations would also have to be quite tight to make them bite.

Question, have you changed your address?

You see that on most trophy waters this time of year, unmatch the hatch and work around pods of baitfish, or just above them if they are that thick. Bust through them if nothing else works. Try contrasting sizes, shapes, and colors to find what works.
