Location: Just above the thermoclime | Here's a question that I can see arguments for both sides...
Let's say you win a 1/2 day trip with "Joe Guide" in some type of promotion / raffle.
Joe Guide's rates are $400 for a half day and $600 for a full day (ficticious numbers to make the math simple).
You figure you'll hire the guide for an additional day and 1/2.
What is the amount you owe? Where does your certificate land - on the front end of the day or the back end?
A) Full day ($600) + 1/2 day ($400) = $1000 + tip on $1000
or
B) Full day($600) + difference of full day and 1/2 day ($200) = $800 + tip on $800
or
C) 2 Full Days ($1200) x 3/4 = $900 + tip on $900
I know if I'm a guide, I am voting solution A, if I'm a client, I'm voting solution B. I think option C is the reasonable approach.

Location: Elk River, Minnesota | I think of it this way... (I have revised my statement)
If you go to a restaurant with a coupon that allows for some sort of a discount (whatever that may be) you still tip the waiter/waitress based upon the full amount of the bill as if you did not have a coupon. What you pay at the register includes the coupon. The server should not lose out on their tip based upon a coupon.
So...Answer A (as I previously stated) would not be correct if you fished the whole day....it would be based upon a full day of guiding at the $600 rate...with maybe a bit extra for the offering of a half day free.
If you fish just the half day, then you tip a half day's pay.

Location: The desert | Not sure how you did your math.....the way I see it....I have a certificate entitling me to a free half day guide....if you want the full day you have to pay the 400 for the other half of day you would like his services.........I would tip a little higher since the guy is good enought to donate to a fundraisor so anything he can make up would be good. I would ask the guide too, I would never want to jip the guy especially if he is a class act......if he's a crap guide then that might change my mind. Just how I see it....dont really have the exprience with guides though. So if this is way off just forget that I posted! Good luck.

Location: Holly, MI | The correct answer is "NONE OF THE ABOVE" You should be tipping on $1200 (not on 1000, 900, or 800)
Like the coupon at a resaturant..you tip on the full price of all services rendered.
You added one and a half days fishing to the half of a day you won, right? Did you not then fish with Joe Guide for two full days? It is irrevelant if 1/2 of a day was gifted to you, He still worked two full days!
Please tip on two full days of fishing.
Just my thoughts. I used to be a waiter (long time ago) but still appriciate good service and will tip well for it. I won't leave less than the expected minimum for average service but reward the excellent. |

Location: Just above the thermoclime | Forget about the TIP guys. The question has NOTHING to do with the tip. Just so you're all happy, let's say we tip on the full $1200.
You're missing the point. The question is how much does the 1/2 day cost? Are you paying for the first half - $400 or the last half - $200 or do you split the difference and pay $300.
I'll simplify it.
Joe fisherman wins 1/2 day guided trip. Joe fisherman books Joe Guide for a full day with the intent on using the certificate as part of the payment. How much does Joe fisherman owe Joe guide, not including tip? The difference between a full and half day fee or the half day's fee.

Nice Guy Eddie: C'mon, throw in a buck!
Mr. Pink: Uh-uh, I don't tip.
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't tip?
Mr. Pink: Nah, I don't believe in it.
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't believe in tipping? |

For the 1/2 day price I would ask the guide... "Can I up my 1/2 day voucher for $200 bucks to make it a full day? I'll be purchasing an extra full day also."
I'll bet he will take you up on the offer.
Negotiations happen in all aspects of life. It also probably wouldn't hurt to thank him for donating the 1/2 day voucher before asking him for the second half of a day for $200. |

Location: Elk River, Minnesota | So...If I am understanding the question correctly, you are asking whether or not the gift won is worth $200 or $400. There are a couple of differenc scenarios that come to mind here...
If the gift allows you to fish for only a 1/2 day, then hands down it is worth $400. Then, if you decide to pay for the other half day, you would pay the difference of $200 to cover for a full day's fishing of $600. You would still tip based upon $600
If you must pay for a half day in order to use the gift, then the gift would be worth only $200 since a half day fishing would cost $400 up front. You still tip based upon $600
The overall would be tip on $1200, but you pay either $800 ($200 day 1 + $600 day 2, when half day only is an option coupon worth $400) or $1000 ($400 for day 1 with coupon of $200, + $600 day 2)
So...you have to read the fine print to determine what the actual worth is, or get it clarified by the guide.

| I am a guide and this is how I would work it. If you were only going for a full day total and you get 1/2 day free a Full day costs 600 you would owe 200 at the end of the day.

Location: Palm Coast, FL | I am also a guide. I have given these trips away and still continue to do so. My donation is for 1/2 day guide. This is the equivalent of my fee for 1/2 day. I would only require the difference between a 1/2 day rate and a full day rate. I charge $150 for half day and $275 for full day. I would only require $125 for the additional half day. If wanting more than one day I might even work out a little more deal. |
