Look in the regs. It is illegal to use goldfish for bait.
They are just baby carp anyway, so I don't see the big deal.
Get some of those orange, yellow and black koi, coi....whatever they are...and I bet you'd pop some fish.

I've seen some of those at the Zoo pond. I wonder if they would miss a couple of the multi-color or a nice white one. I bet they would work great.

Goldfish come from Asia and are in the carp family, invasive species. I know it is illegal to use them in Wisconsin.

I would be surprised if this was legal anywhere.

The SS Shad guy makes some baits in that exact pattern.

According to the 2005 Michigan Fishing Guide, in our state it is illegal to possess or transport bighead carp, black carp, silver carp, and grass carp. It also states that live carp and/or goldfish are not considered lawful bait.

I once proudly caught a "golden sucker" in a local river and then dragged it around a half day on a local muskie lake. When I was taking my boat out I threw the recently-expired bait on the shore, and another fellow asked why I was using a young carp for bait. I'm sure he was right, it was a carp. Glad I wasn't checked by the DNR that day.

Assuming you want to do this in IN where I used to fish, regs say you can't. BUT if you can find it, they used to make a powdered dye you can use to change the color of the fins and/or scales. It doesn't kill the fish. I couldn't find it but I understand it is still available. It was not designed for fish so you won't find it in fish stores. Wish I could give you more info.
