Hey guys, curious as two what type of rods are used to troll those 12+ inch baits. Also type of line and leaders you use. Thanks for the info as I am trying to gear up for my first season out east...Ben Also is there a big difference in techniques from the St. Lawrence, Niagra, and Ottawa areas? Want to be ready for all of it...Ben

Ben,myself depending on where I want the baits placed(high or low),I will use different gear.Running the baits deep and staggering them , I like wire.

I run the long rods on the outside and the short one wich is the highest bait right in line with the transducer.Outside rods, anywhere from 18 to 30 feet deep, the transducer rod,12 to 18 deep, picking up and trigerring fish I drive over and mark.[:p]

When fishing upper colum, outside rods short and transducer rod or center rod on my boat flat out and running deeper. The short rods, baits are running at bait fish level or just under, say 8 to 12 foot down and the flat liner 18 or more to p/u the bottom dwellers.I may run dacron on the outside and wire down the middle or some times all wire.Realy what I see on the screen helps me to decide what to use.
One thing about the Larry and the Big O,up or down there is fish to be caught, just wich way that day they would like their meal served is the key.

Good luck in cold front land!

Ben,
In late fall is when I run most of the 13" and bigger crankbaits here on the Niagara River and Buffalo Harbor.Slow,2.0 mph,School Stack:I run four 13"Legend Plows Straight all in one color pattern, usualy natural colors because the water can be gin clear to 30 feet here. The inside rods will be 7'St.Croix Pro-Glass XHvy,with Okuma Linecounter reels spooled up with 80 lb test PowerPro and a leader that is 6 foot long, made of 70 lb test Fluorocarbon,Aussie Swivel between leader and main line and Stringease Stay-Lok Snap #7 at the other end.The out rods will be 10' St.Croix Pro-Glass Hvy,with Okuma Titus 50 Leverdrag reels, spooled with 45 lb. test Leadcore line and the same leader as above. The inside rods are the down rods or the tight action, first through the structure. The Legend "Plows" are connected on the deep eye, closer to the nose of the bait, very tight action that runs mostly straight and deep. The out rods are the wonder action and come through the structure about 15 feet behind the first set of "Plows" that were high vibration with a tight wiggle. The Legend "Plows" on the out rods are connected to the eye closer to the end of the lip,the shallow setting, they will wander around about 3 to 4 feet from side to side looking injured. The Leadcore line that is used with the out rods is what gets the shallow setting "Plows" down to the same 30 to 35 foot structure as the first set of high action "Plows that went through first. This is a very high productive method for Big One's when they are down laying tight to deep structure, they usualy will take the second set of "Plows" that look injured.Suspended fish and using big crankbaits 13" and bigger, some times I use 30 lb test Berkley Excalibur 10X Copolymer Line on Okuma Linecounters and 7' St.Croix Med-Hvy rods.I will be covering more water at a faster speed,3.5 mph and up,something has to give when a 40 lber hits going the opposite direction.Get on the water man,now you have options the Larry,Ottawa,Georgian Bay and the Niagara are all with in driving distance. Ben,

I am running Berkely Reflex 10' Super Heavy rods, with Penn 320 reels, 45 pound Musky Master, and my own custom 36" single strand stainless leaders. This outfit will haul snowmobiles off of the bottom of the lake! Works good on deadheads too, as I found out when I was fishing with Bill Craig a couple of weeks ago.
