I know, I know, the picture is of me, but he wouldn't (and probably couldn't safely) hold it. He wanted desperatly to take the pictures of it though. No interest in being in them, just taking them. Sheesh, 4 year-olds...
Anyway, we got out late this morning so in a strategic move, I left all of my casing rods at home to force myself to try some trolling. We snapped on a Shallow raider for the line closest to shore, a baby Depth raider for the line behind the boat and a Slammer deep diver for the outside line. We had 1 hour to fish, then had to do the 'kid exchange' with my wife after she was done with work. I trolled over this little shelf (old road bed) and both of the deeper lines were scraping bottom, as soon as we cleared it Nik's clicker started singing - he had the outside line. I told him to reel as fast as he could (to keep the line tight) as I cleared the other lines. He did a great job, but wore out pretty fast and asked if I would help him. His idea of help happened to be handing me the rod - hahaha. Anyway, he busied himself w/ getting the net ready and barking orders on how to go about 'not losing his fish' - talk about pressure! Well, when it cleared the hoop of the net, I began to breathe again. Nik's first - a nice fat Pineview tiger...
oh yeah, for those keeping score - 41"

Great job Sorno!! How late can you fish(Muskies) in Utah? What is the elevation of the lake? Do your lures cast farthur in the thin air?

Sorno,

What a great story. Sounds as if you have quite a kid--and fisherman, at that--there.

Congrats on his first fish!

Excellent work by you and the young lad, great story and great fish. I only wish my ol' man was into muksy fishing when he was taking me fishing at 3 year old.

That's about as good as it gets, sir! What a great shot, and a beautiful fish to boot.

My youngest is nw 25 ( I started my family pretty early in life), and still outfishes me, still barks orders about not misnetting or losing his fish, and is still one of my all time favorite fishing buddies.

GREAT fish Kent!! Congrats to the both of you. Isn't a great feeling to boat one with them?

No one has mentioned it yet, but THANK YOU for having the little guy in a LIFE JACKET. I am more lax now, which is probably not good, but I ALWAYS had my son and daughter in life jackets. Now, being a little older, they get to shed them when the boat is not up on plane.

Great fish, great pic, great experience for the both of you.

Chuck

Chuck,
Thanks, and FYI - life jackets are mandatory in Utah for those under age 12. Not that they wouldn't be wearing them anyway. I wear mine too when I'm with them - or anyone that I feel would not be able to help haul my carcass either onto the boat or to shore. I just took it off for messing w/ the fish and the pic. It goes on again before I hit the ignition. I also use the kill switch lanyard when trolling w/ the little guys - would be a tough time for them to have to learn how to drive a boat...

Sorenson,
Congrats on a great day on the water with the kids!
What a great way to recruit new anglers. Start 'em young. Keep 'em hooked for life.
Best to you and your family,

Couldn't have happened to a better guy. Your son is going to be hooked for life. Might want to be thinking about some new gear, as I am sure your son will want to go fishing more often. WH

Kent,
Do you remember how big a fish that size looked to you when you were 4 years old? What an awesome day for you two! What a memory! Beautiful fish too. Congrats!

Congrats Kent!!! What a true trophy (Your son's first fish and the memory too!!).

I guess that means that you thought I would be able to pull your "carcass" back into the boat then when we fished together!!!!

A proud Dad in deed!!!

What an awsome deal!!
I got my boys into it early too. 'Nice to have lakes to troll on"
When my oldest was also 4 the whole family was out trolling. Afer an hour or so the rod went off and i gave it to brad he was just starting to reel when the fish jumped and he saw it. He wanted nothing to do with it, he kept saying its to big i cant doit. well i ended up bringing that one in 44". About 1/2hour later we got one on again an he tried again and landed his first Muskie 28" he said this one is my size. Great memories
