Location: Elkhart, IN | I was just wondering, in the late fall the muskies will go back out deep, are they suspending or hanging out closer to the bottom? I had some luck with glidebaits late fall last year and wanted to know if the fish were coming up a long ways for the lures or a little? |

| They suspend near baitfish and deep water structure, and they can reach your bait with a swipe of their tail no matter what depth they are at. Never fish for them deeper than 20 to 25 feet. They will come up from deeper and grab it if they really want it. |

Location: Greenfield, WI | I have a good friend that never leaves his dock on Minocqua without his underwater camera. Last weekend he saw a +45" in 40' of water just off the bottom. He also saw two muskies in less than 10' of water along a weed edge.
After turnover, they seem to have the potential to be anywhere at any depth, in proximity to food sources. |

Since you are from Elkhart I am guessing you are fishing Webster. Once turnover occurs the oxygen in the water is the same at the surface as it is at the bottom. Once the cooler temps cool the water even more (39 degrees) fish will tend to stay deeper. This is because water weighs the most at this temperature. It also holds the most amount of oxygen. This is not to say that some fish are shallower because they are there also. In fishing Webster I am also sure you have seen many people jigging for muskies in 30'+ of water using jigs. They are keying in on those fish that are 15' and deeper all the way to the bottom.
I also use my underwater camera to take a view of what is down there. I came across many big hooks on my fish finder 2 years ago. I kept trolling and casting to the same area thinking they were muskies but never even got a follow. I put my camera down and found that it was 100's of gar suspended 15' down all the way to the bottom. I went further with my camera and no more than 100 yards away I found 4 muskies laying on the bottom in 27' of water. I continued to jig with fuzzy duzzits for them and got 7 to bite in the next 3 hours.
Don't give up on the shallow fish either...while out with a friend of mine last fall, he boated a 46" pig on a magic maker over 40' of water. |
