Location: Madtown, WI | We (Capital City Chapter of Muskies Inc) have 700 leech lake strain muskies arriving at Olin boat launch on Lake monona,(Madison, WI) at 2 pm on Friday Nov. 4th. We will be dumping the fish into a netted area and then transferring them to another netted area as we fin clip them (actually, Scott Stewart of the WIDNR will be overseeing the fin clipping). The fish will then be transported to various areas of the lake to increase the odds of survival. We have issues with the sea gulls cleaning house if we dump them right at the launch.
Everyone is welcome to come and observe. We have plenty of helpers signed up but feel free to come over and watch!
We have been working very closely with the DNR and have spent a lot of time to get monona included into the study of the Leech Lake strain fish in WI waters. Starting next year the lake will be receiving an equal stocking of Leech lake strain and WI strain fish that are PIT tagged for tracking purposes of growth, survival, etc. This years stocking is not officially part of the study that will begin next year, however, with the way we are clipping the fish we will be able to determine that they are from this years stocking and will be able to gather data on this fish if they are recaptured in the future. We are very excited to be a part of the study to help determine how these two strains perform in our neck of the woods. We feel monona has some unique characteristics from the other northern lakes in the study. Monona has a longer growing season, very sizable water, a VERY strong forage base. Unlike the fox chain and other southern waters, our water temps are more tolerable through the summer months. Hopefully these differences can help provide a range of "settings" versus the St. Croix basin lakes, Petenwell, and Wissota.
This years stocking would not have been the size it is if it wasn't for the generosity of the following clubs that donated money to support this stocking. A big thank you to the Flatlanders chapter of MI, Oregon Muskie Busters, and the Janesville Blackhawk muskie club.

This action proves that is a lasting attribute there, great organization with some very good sticks and folks willing to go beyond making noise and get something done. Long live the Leech Lake muskies in Mad Town! |

| Same thing is happening here in Lake Wissota in Chippewa County. Friday Nov. 4th around 9:30 AM at the Rod and Gun boat landing on Lake Wissota members of the First WI Chapter of Muskies Inc. will be taking posession of the 500 Leech Lake fingerlings we purchased. Like the Madison Chapter we will be fin clipping the fish this year and in the years to come will be PIT tagging equal amounts of Leech fish and Wisconsin strain. Thanks need to go out to Joe Kurz (our DNR Fisheries Biologist), Scot Stewart (Madison area Fisheries Biologist) and Scot Ironside (Petenwell area Fisheries Biologist). Without thier help and support this project could not have taken place.
PIT tags will need to be purchased for the next few years for all 3 bodies of water so these fish can be studied. If you would like to help with this project I am sure the clubs involved would welcombe donations for the purchase of the PIT tags. I would think you could contact Cory for helping with tags for Monona, Jason Schillinger for Petenwell or myself for Lake Wissota.

Location: north central wisconsin | We will be stocking Leechers next week some time too(Petenwell). I hope to hear from the hatchery soon. It had been to warm to transport the fish, but should be good to go now. We are fin clipping this year, and hopefully PIT tagging in the future.

| For the past 3 years Capital City chapter of M.I. quietly approached WDNR biologists in Madison and asked about the possibility of allowing stocking of Great Lakes strain muskie or Leech Lake strain in Madison lakes. Since these lakes have no natural reproduction Scot Stewart our DNR fisheries biologist recieved persmission to allow Leech Lake strain fish to be stocked. To Scots credit, he formulated the idea to make this a study of growth rates for L.L. strain and Wis. strain fingerlings! Jim Olson, Cory Painter and Tom Penniston, CCMI board members, have worked with Scot and the plan was formulated. Tom recieved a grant from Muskies Inc. to purchase Pit tags as well. In the future both L.L. and Wis. Strain fingerlings will be Pit tagged and studied for growth rates on Lake Monona. This year the fish will be fin clipped but in years to come, tagged. Each Pit tag costs an average of $5.00 per tag, so yes, Madison, Petenwell and Wissota will need lots of financial help in the future to purchase tags.
A big thanks to all mentioned above for their efforts including Jason on Petenwell and Mark et all, on Wissota! Lets hope these fish do well in our waters!
