Aaah the infamous "Gremlin". The problem is probbably excessive voltage drop. This can be from an bad battery( does the engine start OK), or a bad/loose connection, or a bad ignition switch.

Most pieces of electronic equipment have a low voltage limit where they will shutdown to protect themselves. If you have voltmeter you can verify this by monitoring the voltage at the depthfinder while starting the motor. I'd probably disassemble and clean all the battery terminal connections first - then check for loose connections at the ignition switch, etc..

Good luck!

Al got my answer....... That's exactly where I'd start.

Just went through an almost identical problem on my boat.

All sorted out now though.

I just went through this with my boat. Almost every time I started the big motor my lms350 would shut off . I upgraded to a better unit and when i installed it I decided to run a dedicated line off the batt to a seprate bus bar just for the 2 locators. So far so good ,2 trips and no problems. before the sep. line I was pulling power from under the dash somewhere ??

I used 12 gauge wire comming off the batt switch up to a bus bar (dont forget to fuse the pos lead) then wire my locators off the bus. 3 amp fuses on each unit.
