I was in the local musky shop a couple wk ends ago and got to talking to the shop owner about musky fishing. He remarked that a local musky guide had just come into the store looking to buy super strong split rings. The guide had said that a giant musky had straightend out the rings on his surface bait the night before and was looking to replace the split rings on all of his baits.

I've never caught a giant musky before, but it struck me that almost any other componenant on a bait, line, leader, snap, drag, reel, etc, would give out before a fish could pull out a split ring.
Have any of you ever seen a musky pull out a split ring? Any pictures?

I just can't imagine a freshwater fish that could create the force needed to pull a split ring apart.

Yes it can especially if it's older.

Remember, your hardware/terminal-ware- hangers, screw eyes, swivels, knots, line etc. is only as strong as your weakest link.

I supose its possible if you're using really cheap split rings, but Wolverines or Buchers? Can't see a fish straightening them unless they were halfway off to begin with.

Who would put THAT MUCH pressure on a big fish anyway?????? I try to always use free spoil or back off the drag a bit and try not to horse the fish around too much. I could see if you had to stop a fish from getting in some cover, but those must be some crappy split rings.

Never had it happen on a fish. But have seen a split ring give out on a snag. Lots of pressure on a cheap ring and it’s very possible. Like above post stated. If the lure does not come with a quality ring switch them out to Bucher or Wolverine. Well worth the time and trouble!

the only time I've ever seen split rings open up was on fish that were in the net and rolled up. when they start to twist and get leverage on your hook that is burried in the net, usually something has to give.
The only split rings I have seen open up were on slammers though, not like buchers or the no name ones at Rollies, those things could hold grown man from falling.
I have seen fish also twist and pop an eyescrew open while in the net.
I don't think it is that hard to put quality terminal tackle on something that is made to be hammered but most companies don't sell their baits complete with indestructable components, its too expensive in their eyes.
just think about how many hooks you guys straighten out on fish by just setting the hook, another issue that haunts many.
don't cheap out on something that should be the least of your worries when mrs. snowcow shows up

I have seen it, mostly like was said above and hooks too, the lure gets hooked in the net, the musky thrashes and tears up the hardware. Now my kids use alot of bass sized stuff for pike and even the smaller pike trash up the split rings and hooks, I have to put better stuff on their baits to just fish pike.

Funny you bring it up.

Just this Monday, I caught a 43" casting a "factory" Jake. While removing the hooks I noticed, there was one gone!!!! I was lucky to get her!

Shame on me though, I had this happen once befor on a "big" fish I hooked trolling, I lost that one. Most of my baits have triples, I "neglected" that bait...shame..shame..shame...

Fish can do it on jumps and rolling and just chewing on the bait. It has little to do with the pressure you put on them. They get the leverage in their mouths...I use wolverine with no problems now a days...Ben

Yes, a Muskie can open split rings and they also can bend over .092 Magnum Screw Eyes. They don’t have to be 50”ers. I was fishing one day when a fish almost ripped the pole from my hands at about 20-25 yards from the boat. The fish came 6 feet or more out of the water when the fish hit so hard and realized the lure was not a real fish.

The photo was a prototype TY-JACK lure with 160LBS 2X Heavy Split Rings. The Magnum Screw Eye was bent almost flat with the bait. The split ring came off with no difficulty at all. And the fish was only 37”!!!!!!!!!! After that nothing but 3X 350Lbs Split Rings on my baits.

I'm with thedude on this one. Proper drag, freespool if you have to...and even a big, big fish should not be able to straighten a ring/snap/hook unless you are using way undersized stuff.

Just my two cents.

I had the same thing happen as Two rivers only with a burt . I set the hook fish came out of water went back in and all I got was my Burt back minus a treble and split ring. Also this past Monday was fishing with a buddy , he got hung up and couldn't get his bucktail unsnagged. We did the net down the line trick . Got his bucktail back minus treble but still had split ring attached to it . Go figure

Ask GLodden to take a picture of his weagle and post it after he caught a 52 x 27.5 on it...the damage is sickening...front spilt ring is almost straight and the middle one is just about the same...and some hooks are straightened...I was sick when I saw it...

I remember getting a hit last summer while trolling a big fish spot, but by the time I got to the rod it was gone. A few minutes later when I was checking the lures, the Jake that got hit was missing the front hook and splitring.

Just yesterday I nailed a hard fighting 47 x 20 inch male ( he actually broke a downeaster on the hit ) and after I released the fish I noticed my believer was missing the front hook and split ring. This most likely happenned in the net and I am pretty sure the hook is in the bottom of the river. The fish had the believer outside the mouth and both me and my partner didn't see a hook in the fish mouth.

I've actually seen pictures of a lure broken in half by a 56 incher, thank god for through wire.

Even with a proper drag setting, and taking extra care with the fish, all it takes is the lure being in the right (or wrong) spot and a fish can exert enough leverage to open a split ring. I'm not talking about pulling straight against it, I'm talking about twisting it and opening it.
Even the best snaps and splitrings and screw eyes can all fail if force is put on them at the proper angle.

these fish can absolutely straighten out split rings, as well as a host of other damage to lures. I have a buddy who had muskies pull the hook hanger straight through the wood on two 9" model Suicks as well as straighten out the split rings on others. Tough fish!

I think with the new 'heavy duty' rings on the market your chances are low of this type of thing happening. That said, many musky lures used to come with rings that looked like they were off of bass lures. Had one straighten a ring on an old grandma bait one time. Now they are all either Bucher's or Wolverines.

For all of those people refering to "Bucher" split rings, here is a bit of information. They are actually Worth size 5 or 7 extra heavy split rings. Bucher Tackle does not have them made special. Mepps uses the same split ring on their Musky Marabous. I have some custom Jakes from Thorne Bros that have the same extra heavy size 7's on them with larger trebles than regular retail Jakes.

Good Morning to ALL,

I have been in contact with some real heavies over the years up on Eagle. I have had split rings open on a few occasions. When it first happened, back in 1990, I asked close friend and muskie fishing expert "Herbie" if I'd had my drag too tight. He said "NO!" He said muskies have an ability to open their mouths....3 times as much pressue opening their mouths, as closing their mouth. So, if their are two hooks in a fishes mouth, and they are pulling at each other, the thing that'll give is either the split ring or their jaw. If the hooks are firmly imbedded in their jaw, something's gotta give. So, if you go with heavy duty split rings, this will keep this from happening.

Secondly, you'll notice occasionally hooks straightening on you. This isn't because you have too much pressure on the fish most of the time. It is because you have two barbs of a treble buried in the corner of a fish's mouth. He then starts opening and closing his mouth rapidly, trying to "dis"embed the bait.

I am guessing I am ALL WET here, but just a theory!

i had bucher open up last year trolling cranks there tough split rings and its the first time.i think it was just the way the bait was in his mouth sideways and it was getting alot of pressure on the ring when she first hit and i still highly recomend these rings just think it was kinda a fluke incident

A trick we used to do before the days of the beefed up rings was to double ring all hooks to baits. This is done by using a second, smaller ring as well as the normal size. The small one sits inside the big one after instalation. Never had one straighten, but a real pain when changing hooks.

I dunno about 1 musky straightening a ring, but I do know this, on heavy baits, like 8-10" HR's and Cobb's....Ive seen the rings begin to "oval". So much weight being thrown so many times the same way does cause stress. Check your rings on heavy baits.

some split rings do fail--weirdest times and not even applying much pressure, I suppose a fish twists and a bad ring stretches out...with super duty rings I don't think it's too big of a deal and most baits are being built a bit better than they used to be.
