Location: Winnipeg Manitoba | I know this has been covered many times on this forum, but I'll ask again. I plan on starting to make my own leaders, I both cast and troll. Should I use multi-strand or solid or both? I've had some issues with the commercial products I've used. |

| I have gone to making my own stainless single strand leaders with 4-5 twists at each end. I have gone heavy enough that they are really strong, but not so heavy that I lose action on my regular sized baits. On the smaller baits, I have gone to smaller diameter for casting smaller grannies, jakes, etc.
Use a good ball bearing swivel, and if you choose, a good solid snap. I have gone back and forth on this, and currently, I am using split rings to attatch baits to my leader. It takes a couple seconds longer to change lures, but I would hate losing a fish to a snap that either broke or opened up from a fish thrashing.
I just feel more comfortable with these styles of leaders.

| I have gone to all single strand and flouro leaders. The seven strand work great for some lures but not for others |

| 80# Flourocarbon tie 'em - don't sleeve 'em
a drop of superglue on the knt for insurance.
Solid wire for Bulldawgs and pull baits.
Works 4 me |

Location: NW WI | Steve or ???? --- what baits should a solid wire leader be used on, and what baits a 7 strand leader??? If you only have one rod/reel, then which one should you use?
THanks for any advise y'all can give me! |

| if you only have one rod, use solid wire. |

| I have gone to all of my rods having sigle wire leaders, regardless of the bait. About the only time I would go to a sevenstrand or flouro would be for smaller twitch/crank baits to maintain some action. I usually go to a lighter weight wire for the smaller baits...
In a general sense, you always want to use a solid wire leader for jerkbaits...especially the glide baits. The pivoting action helps in that walk-the-dog sway...
Trolling, a flouro or sevenstrand would do fine, but watch out for nicks and cuts...

Location: Elkhart, IN | I make my own leaders. I use about 120# piano wire (not positive about the test, I'm sure it's over 100# though) and split ring on one end and a ball bearing swivel on the other end. About 10" to 12" long. I only cast with them.
Good luck!

Location: Mpls, MN | I used to buy the leaders from Thorne Brothers. At $2-$3 a pop I figured why not try to make my own single strand. I used the same stuff they did. 174lb from Mason. Snaps and ball bearing swivels or if its a jerkbait one I use a solid o ring rather then the swivel. Get some round nose pliers, vice gripes and I was good to go. The haywire twist doesn't work for me on the 174lb wire so I just do a tight wrap. What's even better is you bend the snot out a leader you can reuse the swivel and snaps and o rings if they are in good shape since you'll make you own. And you have the convenience to make them when you need them and can make them whatever length you want. I don't use multi strand except for trolling now that I have gotten into that and just bought those few since I don't do that a lot. Oh well my 2 cents. |
