My wimpy pc doesn't look like it will run the GoogleEarth application. I'd be interested in seeing a lake image using the application if someone can post it.

I do have a series of large format aerial photographs for my favorite Minnesota lake. The level of detail that you can see on shallow underwater structure is pretty incredible. It's a great supplement to the published topographic maps.

If the Goggle application could do that, I think it would be a useful tool.

Google Earth is pretty cool, but they are nowhere near being complete with all the mapping.

Try this site. Not always new images but it doesn't require a download: http://terraserver.microsoft.com/

I actually prefer the site below, which shows water clarity of Wisconsin's lakes using remote sensing from satellites to estimate the clarity:

You can also check status of many of Wisconsin's lakes using the data from the self help lake monitoring volunteers, who check water clarity, dates of ice on / off, dissolved oxygen and other chemical composition data, water level, etc of thousands of lakes in the state several times a year. In fact, if you live on or have property on a lake, or even visit a particular lake frequently think about becoming a self help volunteer yourself. The DNR provides all training and equipment. In this day and age of shrinking budgets, it's up to all of us to help monitor our lakes:
