Thinking of treating myself to an 8' Custom Diamondback jerkbait rod, wondering what a good reel would be for something like this?
Going to use the rod for: suicks, x-glides, hughes rivers, bobbies, etc.

I've used the ABU C4s in the past, but the gearing doesnt hold up as well as I'd like it to. Any other suggestions?

I HAVE HAD GOOD LUCK WITH SHIMANO CALCUTTA 400'S HAVE THEM ON ALL BUT ONE MUSKY ROD. THEY ARE VERY SMOOTH AND CAN TAKE THE ABUSE A MUSKY OR MUSKY LURE CAN GIVE. THEY ARE AROUND $220 FOR THE NEW 400B

Quantum Cabo PT - I have a Shimano Conquest (Japanese version of the Calcutta TE) and the Quantum reel casts further and I like the gear ratio 5:7 - 1 -- works well for jerk baits. There drag systems are great too.

Best value reel on the market today -- hands down.

The Shimano is a great reel -- but it also costs twice as much too.

I have about every brand there is in my rack, and find that all are ok if maintained well. My Okumas are solid so far, with two hard seasons on them, as are my Abus with 5.

I use Calcutta TE 400s on my Diamondbacks but not for really heavy baits like Hughes Rivers or big baits that I want to rip like big Jakes etc. I go w/ an inexpensive glass saltwater boat rod and an ABU 7000 for those. Beat the ---- out of that rig and I don't care. I can't bring myself to abuse a good rod and reel w/ those baits. For Suicks and the like I would get the TE. For the heavy baits get something you worry about less. Any reel will cast a bait that weighs a pound.

cardiffs are all right, there nice and smooth but I went through 2 of them in 2 months, don't know if this was factory defect or what, then I bought a TE, enough said.

I went through a cardiff in 2 days, got a new one.... out in one day...... in 2002 my last year of using Abu's I went through 13 of them in one season.

Two reels that I stand behind....

Tica Caimen CM200 and the Gander Mountain GS 66

The other reels simply can't and won't hold up.

Had a Caiman, it broke.
I'm convinced there isn't a reel out there that won't break at some point.
I'd second the Quantum Cabo ...I have 2, LOVE them.

I have used a Penn 955 for the last couple of years. Still works perfect.
