Last fall was my first shot at sucker fishing. I didn't do too well. Lots of frustration. How do you fish suckers? Tackle , techniques, favorite spots?

It depends on the type of fishing you are doing. If you plan on fishing near or on weeds I would forget the sucker as hang ups on weeds deplete your fishing time. If you are fishing a weed edge, put the sucker out on the deep side and right next to the boat about 5-7feet down, just out of sight. Finally, I like to run two suckers on quick set rigs during later fall. One rig right next to the boat on the side I am casting on and one on a bobber rig, on the other side of the boat and deeper. I run the bobber about 20 ft. behind the boat. I always use quick set rigs and will play around with tail gunners and the size of the sucker. Generally, like to use suckers that are 12-18 inches long. I always use quick set rigs with the rubber band and one set of trebles. One trick I use is to puncture the rubber band with the point of a hook. As I want to make sure the rubber band breaks freely when I set the hook. My hooking percentage is still around 50-60 %. Unless the fish is running hard, I generally try to take my time and make sure the line is at a 45 degree angle to the boat before I set the hook. When the clicker goes off it reminds me of a scene from jaws when the crew hooks the shark. Good luck this fall.

I too will be fishing suckers for the first time this year on Namekagon...I was wondering what everybody thought was the best sucker rig to use...I have a Small/Medium Sized Bucher Sucker Rig, a Medium/Large Sized Bucher Sucker Rig, and a Mania Lift off Rig. I was thinking of investing in a Herbie Rig but didn't know which had the best hooking percentage. My buddy goes to Eagle every fall and used the Herbie Rig for the first time last year. They only lost one of three fish that hit the suckers. Just curious what you guys thought about the best rig to use as far as hooking percentage goes and which one is the least harmful...

Thanks Big Gun, What size rods do you use? I was using my 9 1/2 ft trolling rods last year and figured I would this year too, but on the way home from fishing Shabbona yesterday I started thinking that they were too long. Not enough hookset power? So now I am thinking like a 8 foot ex heavy? I think my guide in Canda couple years ago used 8 foot Croix glass rods? Does that sound right? Anyone?

I use a regular graphite rod that is 71/2 ft. long. I don't think rod length makes much difference, but make sure the rod has enouph hook set power and some play after you hook the fish, as the fish fight very hard in the fall.
