| I run a 2000 Einrude 40 horse 4 stroke. I had the original MI Wheel prop - 11 1/2 x 13.
I have heard good thingds about the Vortex brand, but the repalcement is a 10 3/8 x 13. Will the diameter difference change any performace in my boat?
Looking for help since I can get the Vortex prop for $40 less than the Michigan wheel original.. |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | The pitch is the same, but the diameter slightly smaller. In my experience, the smaller diameter will turn a little higher RPMs even though the props are the same pitch because of less wheel in the water. |

Do I read this rite ? If the pitch is the same it's ok but he'll need more rpm's to get the same speed due to smaller diameter and less thrust ?

| Another option is a Pro Pulse. They are composite props that the pitch can be adjusted from 12 to 16 and the blades can be individually replaced. The pich determines the rpm that the engine operates at. Less pich results in higher rpm. What you want is for your engine to run at maximum safe rpm at wide open throttle. A one inch change in pitch makes a 200 rpm change. A four blade prop gets the boat on plane quicker, lets it stay on plane at lower speeds, has less vibration, is less likely to ventilate in sharp turns, but has slightly less top end speed. I run a composite prop and have had no problems. If you run in a lot of rocky lakes the ProPulse could save you a lot of money. West Marine has them for $140.00. In the long run that is cheap since you can replace a blade if you bang a rock. Later |

| Thanks for the help guys. If you ever need really good advice, call Formula Props up in Brooklyn Park, MN. I had a long conversation with them regarding my rig, engine and 2 props, the Original 11 1/2 x 13 Michigan Match which I have been really happy with for 3 years or the newer Michigan Vortex Prop which is the 2 peice exchangeable hub system. Formula One told that the replacement for the original prop is have would go down in diameter and thus exceed my RPM's. Apparently they have spoken to Michigan Wheel about this and a new prop may come out next year. Due to my rig, he recommended staying with the same prop I had and thus I am.
For the Michigan Vortex route, he does recommend those props for bigger engines, etc.....Call them and you won't be disappointed! |
