Here's a topic I don't remember seeing on here. Do you think it matters if you're using a jointed crankbait or a straight crankbait? And if so under what conditions do you use each?

Straights don't hang in wood as bad. In dark water jointed lures make more noise. I use 8 inch jointed Believers on the shallow eye in dark water in the wood in spring, but use straight cranks if I am going deep. As for trolling, some days they eat straight, some days they eat jointed, and some days they eat both. I let the fish tell me what they want. Later

With lots of my muskies coming on crankbaits in the fall, I've found that the magic number seems to be 54-55 degrees in water temp, when I've switched to almost ALL straight. I believe it gives the idea it is moving slower without the joint in the middle.

This has held true for many years, except up on Eagle Lake one late fall, when good friend, and awesome muskies angler, Craig Eversoll, had a HUGE (I'm talking 58-60") coming crusing in on a jointed Depthraider....it was such an awesome sight.

Just my 2 cents worth!

I like to troll and cast jointed lures. Around sparse cover I like using a stop and go retrieve. When I throw straight cranks, I usually use them almost like I do a Suick or any other "pull bait". That's just me. I hate to admit it, but I've never caught a muskie over 40" on a crankbait. But that doesn't keep me from trying.

I agree with the Redman about water clarity and which bait to use, heck he taught me all I know about trolling!
I do think that water temps below 54-55 degrees call for straight baits though. I think it gives a bait the look of being slower at the same speeds...if that makes any sense.
But like all things related to muskies, you never really know what the he-double hockey stick they want. So I have caught fish doing exactly the opposite of "the book" when trolling.

Caught 1 fish shortlining a 9 inch grandma today over 20+ FOW. Had another fish on on a jointed depth raider but he got off. Also had i hell of a hit on the jointed raider then all of a sudden he is gone. Seems today they were just hungry for the trolling bite. All 3 fish came in the exact same area too?
