Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | OK guys, I need some ammo and quick. I've just been invited to a meeting with the Darkhouse association, a local sportsman group, and lakeshore association to discuss spearing on French Lake MN. Needless to say I don't think that any of those organizations are going to be pro muskie.
I need scientific documentation that shows that muskies don't eat all the walleyes, don't eat people's children and anything else you can think of. I'm meeting with them next Monday so the quicker the better. I also need Chris Cochran's phone number.
I'm going to be making some calls to see if it's an open or closed meeting. If it's an open meeting I'll be trying to rally the troups. The meeting is in Fairbou @ 4pm at the Elks Club if anyone is interested. I'll post more info as I hear it.

I need:
What's the increase in muskie fishermen in the USA? I believe it was in the 10-20% range.
Which lakes are off limits to spearing in MN?
How many lakes to we technically have? How many have pike?
Anyone know any vital muskie tourist info as to how many people are coming over to fish muskies? How about the % of booths at shows promoting MN guides and resorts over other desitinations?
Travel distance between French Lake MN and Madison Lake MN (Mankato).
# of fish that MI has stocked in MN over the last couple years.
I'll be sending a mass email to the presidents of the other MI chapters to see if I can get any other info. Boy that video would be nice to have right now. |

Location: Hugo, MN | Anyone able to join Treats would be doing the Muskie community a great service. The problem with getting spearing banned on Muskie lakes in Minnesota is in many cases turnout to meetings. The DNR will have a meeting and 100+ guys from the Darkhouse Assn will show up and only 5-10 Muskie guys will end up being there.

Location: WI | We were on Lake Vermilion a couple of weeks ago. As musky fisherman (women) we have a lot of work to do in educating the average homeowner. At one of the marinas where we docked our boat, we had several conversations with homeowners on the lake that said the following comments. "Come over to our pier, we have a 62 incher that lives there and we want to get rid of it". When explaining that we only catch and release they didn't seem to understand.
One homeowner said that they wouldn't swim around their pier because of a 62 incher (hmmm two 62 inchers on the same lake??) that lives under their pier, and that the neighbor girl has a pierced belly button and if he was her he wouldn't be swimming with that on!!
Another group we talked to told us to "Kill the f@#%ers" and a women talked about how they speared a musky one night. Well, needless to say we were not pleased.
I hope your meeting is sucessful, MI has been doing a great job promoting our sport, I hope we can do more.

| if history in this state has taught us anything its that the spearers show up in force when theres any kind of public meeting,,,we hate to say it but their better organized then us,,,

we have another issue too,,Bryant lake is being pursued by the water skiers and they want a sllalom course over one of the weed beds which is used by the tigers and bass,,the bass use it to spawn,,they will terrorize that cute little hybrd lake,,I think the meeting for that is the 29th and IS open to the public,,CC from NM is sending the details |

Location: Minneapolis, MN | Don't know if you can spin this right but if muskie anglers number say 1200 in the cities and the spearing organization has only 100 members then is it reasonable for them to have access to more than 10% of the muskie lakes? If so then I would be upset because their license fees only represent 10% of the muskie fisherman license fees but they can do more impact. |

| Dosent french have a reputation has being one of the darker murkier waters in the state????,,even if it does get clearer in the winter is it clear enough to be safe at what your targeting |

I gotta check, maybe the ringleaders here came from Minnesota. It seems the the meek always lineup with the loud mouth bully types and believe all their crap.

Norm Wild and Mike Roberts worked very hard this summer to acquire and put into superb form the materials available from our DNR and other sources that the muskies in a local lake were not harming the panfish population, that indeed the muskies there were in need of additional protection, and that education about the issue was key before any decision should be made. A very influential group of folks listened carefully to the data, to very vociferous detractors and to calm, well informed supporters, and voted overwhelmingly for strong conservation measures that wouldn't have otherwise have had a snowball's chance in Hades. |

One of the Darkhouse members stayed with us for a few days on Vermilion last week. He seemed very certain about not spearing muskies. |

| You are only suppose to spear Pike in Darkhouses. The population of Pike on French is low, so wouldn't this be a slam dunk, for protecting the pike population also? You can't spear Walleye, Bass, or Muskies.

| this is from WI, not MN, but might be helpful as it's reseach one of the exact issues (muskies eating walleyes) that you're sure to talk about...
the March 2003 WI DNR "Muskellunge Management Update" (Publication FH-508-2003) quotes a graduate research project on the food habits of Wisconsin muskies (Burrie 1997).

over 4 years it sampled 1092 muskies, 8-46 inches in length
fish comprised 98% of the muskies diet
yellow perch 30%, and white sucker 8.4% were the biggest food sources

bass and walleye were relatively unimportant
only found 6 walleyes (0.9% of diet items, 0.5% of muskies sampled)
only found 17 bass (2.9? of the diet items, 1.6% of muskies sampled)

Well, hate to say it but this is our first major challenge since Frank Schneider has passed on, let's do his memory proud and turn out in force. Has anyone contacted Dave Overland? He should be told about this. |
