Location: So. Illinois | I need help deciding on the size of a trolling motor for my boat. I posted an earlier thread asking questions about adding a trolling motor to my run-about. Thanks to Mikie, Rockin'SV and Kevin for your inputs. I am looking for a few opinoins on the size I should buy since I am finding different info and recommendations on the web.
I have a 19'2" runabout, that is pretty heavy. I don't have any specs on the boat so I am unsure of the weight. I have an inboard mercruiser 140. The distance from the waterline to the level where I will be installing the motor is 30 inches. I am considering a Minn Kota 74lbs (24V) Powerdrive with a 60" shaft. Would the 74lbs be strong enough, or will the 60" be overkill (should I consider a 54" shaft)? I appreciate any suggestions offered.

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | The 60" shaft will be great when and if you are trying to hold in large waves. Consider that a 2' wave puts the motor shaft top out of the water over 50", that's when the longer motors are nice to have. 74# should be plenty for the rig. |

Location: Chicago, Beverly | I thought a 52" was too big on my 160 Rampage, now I don't really notice it as much.. I always say go with the most lbs thrust you can afford.. With the weight of your boat(or what I am guessing it may weigh) there may be times heavier then 74lbs would be nice.. In most situations it may work perfect though.. |
