| I'm going to beat the dead horse even more...
I'm thinking about just making all my leaders from now on fluoro. I'd like to just take the fluoro and tie it directly to the main line (~14") with a swivel and String-Ease snap on the "business" end. What knot is easiest? Those of you who may use this set-up, care to share any advice? Thanks much! |

| I use a 3-4 wrap uni knot.

| I was under the impression that a uni is appropriate when the two lines are of similar diameter. I use 80# floro and 80# PowerPro, and the floro is significantly larger.
Also, the link between the line and leader is where I place a piece of hardware (Bucher Ring) that prevents the leader from entering the top eye when going into a 8. Most useful, especially at night. Why? First, I want only 12-14" of leader out as I swing into to the 8; I want my 8's perfect considering I hook about 25% of my fish at boatside these days. Second, and more importantly, heavy line pressure from a boatside strike will hang any knot/swivel that has passed thru the top eye on the top eye, preventing you from feeding line out in order to play the green fish. I use the tricked out drag (Smooothies!) first and then give the fish additional line with the button/bar after she's done with that initial run.
Just my amature thoughts on a good question. Others know better, but the above has worked well for me. |

Good point about wanting an exact amount of line out when doing Fig 8s. However, what do you do about the tip tops? The only time I've ever night fished was this past week on Mille Lacs. My dad and I destroyed two tip tops from not being able to visually pick up the bait and swing it properly into a fig-8. This is one reason why I want to eliminate the extra hardware at the top of the leader.
BTW, you hooked me up with a few leaders earlier this year. They were constructed REALLY well! Thanks again! |
