Location: Wishin I Was Fishin' | I'm looking to buy a couple of dipsy divers for trolling to get musky baits deeper....10" Jake, Rapala Shad Rap, bucktails.....
What brand/size/option is the best?
Where can I buy them?
Thanks for the help.

Location: Racine, Wi | Joe, I am by no means an expert on this as of yet (work in progress), but I would say go with the Lure Jensen dipsys in a size 1 I think. (the biggest one) You might need to adjust the tension setting though so they don't keep releasing from the drag of the baits. |

Jo;
I would use the largest you can purchase. Since they may release or not work properly with big cranks that pull a lot, I would use the big Floating Rapalas. Redfins. possibly Super Shad Raps and big huge spoons. Do you remember Spencer Pietros articles about trolling with "dodgers" as spoons? You need to use baits that will not work against the dipsy. You might also try big plastic baits, they usually slide through the water.......So. forget the Jakes, Believers and bucktails.

Location: oswego, il | Joe it don't work. The drag will turn the dipsey over and it will be on top of the water. Tried it, been there. Anything with any amount of drag will screw them up. I did troll a vibrax spinner and got a musky that way but a bigger bucktail did not work. I even tried a 6' leader, no help. |

Location: North East PA , 20 mins from Chautauqua | I have run small bucktails and was thinking of trying to troll bulldawgs behind them this fall The size that you normally see is size #1 but this year they came out with a giant dipsey diver I'm willing to bet that it may be able to pull a little bigger bait ? Check the lure jensen website out for info ?

Location: Holly, MI | Ditto on "don't work". Dawgs and other very light drag items may work. They flip over and surface with not too much drag.
Try Lake St Clair style to run stuff deeper if you want. I have run up to 16 oz of lead off a 3 way swivle then a 5 foot mono leader back to the lure. I know guys who use up to 24 oz lead balls. I use quick release clips to hang 'em. Remember that the weight is there or you might wind up with a smart bump on the noggin swinging the lure back in the boat. It will also catch a lot of weeds for you if there are floaters that like to run down your line and fowl the lure. |

Out IN state record was caught on a Mag Bulldawg behind a Dipsey. You are a pretty fast troller as I recall but if you are inclined to slow down to say 3mph or less a Super Shad Rap on about 6' or less of leader works OK. Most people who troll deep use downriggers don't they? I'd certainly look into that too. |

Location: Wishin I Was Fishin' | I troll around 3mph.
It would be tough to put down riggers on my bass boat....yuk.
Thanks for the help.
I will try the lead weight thing and look into the bigger dipseys. |

Jo,
Drawings of what Lobi's speaking of may still be available at the Rocketmans muskie site. His address can be found at www.toothycritters.com in the tackle section.........He was a feature of an article in InFish several years ago. Many people still troll on Lake StClair in the manner devised by Homer LeBlanc. |
