Location: Seymour, WI | Just wondering if you guys have any goals for things you want to try to improve in your musky fishing this summer?
In years past one of the things I've really been working on is boat control. Being able to keep the boat on the structure I'm fishing.
Last yr I concentrated on watching my lure during the retrieve and getting better at Figure 8's.
This yr I'm really trying to be certain I'm getting a good hookset in the fish and trying to keep them pinned during the fight. (lost a couple nice ones last yr due to bad hooksets or jumps during the fight.)
What are you trying to get better at in your musky fishing this yr?

Location: Antioch, IL | I could make a duplicate of your list Grass. I also want to get better at disecting structure and finding spots on spots. (combine info from maps, depth finder and what I see and feel on the water to give myself the best chance to be near fish) I have a bad habit of finding 1 spot that looks decent, but instead of moving spot to spot I just keeping banging along without really checking the area out for additional spots. (need to eliminate as much of the "luck" factor and add some "knowledge") |

Location: Pardeeville, WI | Numbers and size. I only caught 4 muskies last year and am yet to crack the 40 inch barrier. I have 1 under my belt this year but have only been on a class A musky lake once this whole year. Im hoping for two solid days of musky fishing this weekend though!!
I would like to catch at least 5 this year with one being bigger than 40 inches. The best is yet to come!! |

| I am going to troll more and learn how to do it better. I rarely troll for muskies, and have never caught one trolling. My crank supply has ample trolling lures, so I am going to learn how to do it. Seems like a good way to cover new water and give my back a break. I troll The Mississippi River a lot for walleyes, so I'm not inexperienced. I just have to make it a point to do it and to do it properly. Getting to know which lures and how much line, etc. will be the stuff that I need to learn.
While we're at it, any advice from seasoned trollers would be welcomed with my July 16th departure for Cass Lake coming up quick.

| I'm trying to improve the casting game. Trolling was a great way to build some confidence in the fact that musky really do eat wood. But now it's my last resort.
Beav- do a search for "rocketman muskie/musky" his sight has a lot of info for trolling starters, he fishes on saint clair.

Location: So. Illinois | Water temps are too high here in So. Illinois and I have no vacation time for this year (just started a new job). I spend my "muskie time" keeping up with this message board, researching tackle trends and techniques, learning seasonal movements of fish and spending my hard earned pennies on muskie stuff.....

Location: ashland wi | My first thought before opener was to improve the numbers of boated fish this season, but so far only 4 in the boat, raised about 15 and lost 2,so improvement still needed.
Also trying to get away from bucktails and twitch baits, picked up some reefhawgs, phantoms, burts and suicks, now i need to force myself to use these more as i think i'm missing a whole dimension to boating fish. |

| Would like to learn how to use my GPS better/get more familiar with it. I think before I go to Mille Lacs I will take that boat out to a nearby lake and mark waypoints all over the lake, then try and see if I can return to the same places by just using the GPS.
Figure 8s. Lost 5-6 last year on figure 8s. I need to force myself to set the hook straight up and initiate the battle by actually walking the fish around the boat forcing it to stay underwater. I don't have problems getting them to hit as I do very erratic and very fast 8s, it's just the hook ups that are killing me.
Relax more. I tend to get VERY intense on the water, especially when we're not catching fish.
Fish big fish spots. Period. I am hell-bent on breaking the 50" mark this year. Don't really care if I catch it or someone else in the boat does. I just want to see a 50" landed. |
