Location: milwaukee | Here's a shot of my first Wisconsin legal fish, boated June 29th in northern WI during a
week-long trip. Hope the pic shows in the post.
39 inches and fat. Skies had thankfully remained gray with cool temps after storms the
previous night. Partner was working topwater, me grinding the deeper weeds with a tandem
spinnerbait. Must have alterted her on the previous cast, or landed it right on her head,
'cause as soon as the blades started spinning, WHUMP!! Put up a short but strong fight, but
I managed to keep her on as she tried to shake the hooks. Clean net job, photo, then
released.
And it's been a long time coming. I've equipped myself with good equipment, proper tools,
developed good casting technique and accuracy, and PRACTICED-PRACTICED-PRACTICED lures and techniques. Studied over and over the information in books, magazines and muskieFIRST - and nothing like this to show for almost two years. There have been some dinks boated, and some misses, botched fight/net jobs, so LOTS of additional learning continues to take place. And it's been fun all along the way.
We had action on several other fish during the week too - I had contact with three others,
one of which felt like it was bigger than this one. My partner had on a mid- to upper-40s
fish in a nearby pothole lake of less than 20 acres.....interesting. Only one fish boated,
but a successful week in my book.
So now I can get rid of the EsoxRookie screen name, and set sight on the next goal - CPR a
Minnesota legal (fishing there in August).
What a great feeling and confidence boost!

Location: Athens, Ohio | Congrats on your first legal, I got my first - and second - in Wisonsin.
Looks like you have perfected the Banjo Hold, I'd ditch the gloves for subsequent photos, makes the fish look smaller.
Good luck on your quest for the Big One! m |

mreiter - nope, in a buddy's boat. Only sub-legal slime so far in the Esox...
mikie - yep, no gloves next time. First legal, was bound and determined that she wouldn't flop out of my hands - thus the 'banjo hold' with gloves
Reef Hawg - A tiger? I guess I'm not sure now after checking my reference books. Anybody else? |
