There's a "HOT" issue at the launch last night on Pewaukee league night. A couple of known Muskies Boy's were arguing about when to stop trolling. At what temp do you stop fishing muskies. With hotter than normal weather this summer the surface water temp on the lake has warmed to 83 degrees. Well known Muskie fisherman have been seeing dead fish floating, even with a qiuck release what is the survival chances?
The question is: When do you stop taking a chance?

Here in Indiana we have had pretty hot weather lately. I have canceled all of my trips as of last Saturday due to high water temps. It is killing me not being on the water, but it is for the fishery.

I called and canceled my trips just before water temps hit 80.

Great topic,, I was thinking of moving to river systems in search of cooler water myself. I figured they should be cooler and I like fishing current anyway. As for now I'm off the Madison Chain until the temps come down, no reason to risk it. I will have to drive a bit further but it's worth it to me.

Weather reports are calling for cooler temps soon, I will hold off the lakes until I see below 80' water temps. That or my boy's & I are fishing for Smallmouth instead for awhile, they like that better anyway. Little Pussies!

Great topic Bruce !!!

I have been talking about this for a few days with all the guides and boys that fish the lake.

I can tell you there will not be anyone that will stop fishing. You know the guys that will be out day in and day out, complaining about the dead fish as they troll around.

I will also get out early and late in the days and fish shallower water. I think if you target the shallow fish and water release them without pictures or any handling they will be ok. Remember its the pulling out of deep cooler water thats the issue here.

Three things that is a must:

Do not fight the fish to long.
Do not bring the fish out of the water.
Bring lots of ice out each day your on the water - if a fish needs to be put in the livewell and slowly cooled down. Remember to add water to the livewell slowly and bring the temps back up to lake temp before release.

Most of the floaters are fish misshandled and out of the water too long.

I did not fish yesterday because of the water temps bieng too high. Sat on the pontoon boat, drank beer and watched the other fishermen troll around all afternoon. Tonight I hope the temps cooled down some with all the rain that came down last night.

The biggest problem will be with the larger fish, they can't take the abuse as much as the smaller fish.

Water release all fish as soon as you can get them to the side of the boat. A quick reach over with a nipex and she will be on her way.

I might just take tonight off also.

Pray for a cool front !!!

Along the same lines, would night fishing even matter, when the nights have been so warm? I know I get out at night more than during peak hours during the summer, but lately, the temps may drop a degree, maybe a little more even at night.

I know once we get some cooler nights, and not so steamy days, it's no problem, but I don't know that nightfishing would make any difference when the water is so warm. (as far as the fish not croaking on ya). I just do the right thing, and troll, but don't actually keep fish pinned up. LOL Makes for an easy release.

You have to do what your conscious tells you to do. I personally feel around 80 is too hot to fish for them, deep, shallow, trolling, casting, at night, or in the morning. I give them a rest. The water will cool down soon enough.

There really isn’t a whole lot of evidence to support this yet, but, I have a feeling this will end up being a lot like single hook sucker fishing. In time someone somewhere will show how bad it actually is for the fish.

I agree with you on this one. Don't get me wrong the last few years up here it's been cold all summer, and water temps didn't get past 80 deg over the course of the summer.

I understand from talk is that the boys down South have the right idea? When the water gets hot they stop fishing to preserve something that everyone has work hard to enjoy. Your still going to have the numbers people and clients, but more information needs to get out about this topic.
If you think about the number of fisherman out on a weekend trolling say that 20 fish are caught over a weekend, of that 50% die.
Thats 10 fish a weekend over the time span of 2 months.
Were trying as a Club fish to stock Okauchee (from the Kly tournament) 100 fish is $1,000.00 - $1,500.00. Thats alot of are stock almost 1/4 of it. Do our friends to the South have the right mind set here?
I would like to see this topic in the Chat Room some night? Wouldn't you?

"I have canceled all of my trips as of last Saturday due to high water temps."

That says a lot, to turn away paying clients to protect your fishery! You are doing the right thing. Hopefully others will follow your example.

Instead of arguing about it we should plan a lake michigan salmon weekend again.

What is the water temps down south when you guys quit fishing?

The water temps dropped 6 degrees in two days up here. Surface temps were up to 80 for a day and then dropped.

I took off the next three days after the temps went to 80. Fished the match thing Saturday and the temps were in the mid 70's.

The fish are going nuts, it could have been a 4 or 5 fish day. We fished the last 4 hours before dark. Didn't go out today. Need more cool night PLEASE.

When do you guys quit fishing?

At what temps?

It seems like I am the only one around here not fishing, the lake is jammed with fishermen.
