I have seen some awesome posts from people who are doing their own painting and lure manufactureing. How do you guys paint the scales, the strips and bars, etc... Do you use some type of template. Are there any good books for people just getting started. I love tinkering. I would really like to try painting my own blanks. Any suggestions out there to help a guy get started. Thanks

You can buy mesh fabric to spray through for scale patterns.
You can also buy stencil material if you want it for stripes and stuff, but I don't use any stencils. The stencils would come in real handy for mass production or for things like tiger stripes where you need them to be pointy. You can pretty much free-hand most anything, but if you want to get intricate, then do a search for air-brush stencil material, and either buy them pre-made or cut your own.

Don't get caught cutting up your wifes saved wedding gown veil for the mesh fabric.. however it will work.
The mesh bag that potatoes and onions come in will give you larger scales. I'll bet somewhere in your house there is something mesh or lacy that will work
If you want dark outlined scales, paint the lure dark then wrap the mesh over the lure and spray over it with some lighter color, opposite for light outlined scales. Just mess around in the garage or basement for a while on some scraps ans figure it out.
I cut a few stencils with an exacto knife for perch bars that ended in points. They look great but I don't think the fish care.

put that mesh in an emroidery hoop. Stencils are cheap. just take some card stock, draw your design, cut it out with an exacto knife, and give both side a good coat of hair spray to made them durable. please post your results. I like seeing shtuff like that.

I started playing around at work with stencils. I run a laser that cuts wood and metal, but am able to tone it down enough to cut tag board, anything in your wildest dreams you can come up with on the computer and it can be put to life in a stencil. It also cuts baits pretty #*^@ fast too.
As far as the scales go, I just cut the bag out of an old minnow net, being the cheapest way I found.
